Guesses midi mode (GM, GS, XG) that midi files were written for. The limited usage of 128 midi instruments and 1 drum kit has gone since
newest soundcards and midi keyboards offer a huge set of new programs.
Some companies have standardized their instrument sets.
Roland offers their GS instrument set. Yamaha offers their XG instrument set.
These sets only work if the device is set to the correct mode. Special initialization sysex commands are necessary to switch to a certain mode.
