EditSafe 1.0

This program operates as a text editor with the addition of features that allow previously saved versions of text files to be re-created. The author and creation time of each version of the file can be displayed. The differences between versions of the file can be seen in an easy to understand color coded format. Features also included are a file comparison feature that shows the file differences between the currently edited file and any other specified file.
The program requires no knowledge of version control programs and does not require check-ins or check-outs to be done. The program does not put any special characters into the text files created. It stores all the file version information in its own history database that is maintained by the program itself.
The program is ideally suited for keeping track of changes to important configuration files. The author and time of each change to files is saved allowing traceability of changes to files.
In order to prevent the history database from becoming over-sized, the program has options to allow old version information to be removed. Limits can be placed on the number of versions stored for each file, and the number of files that have version information stored. Another limit can remove all versions older than a given age.
An additional maintenance program is included that will compact the history database to ensure optimal efficiency. This can only be run when no file editing is taking place and so is suited for being run as a scheduled overnight job. A log file is generated to indicate its activity.
All files created are fully compatible with any other text editor, however if changes are made outside of EditSafe, then it will not be possible to maintain the history of the file. For this reason it is advisable to allow EditSafe to act as the standard text editor on your system.
For licensing reasons EditSafe can only run on computers that have Microsoft Word(tm) installed on them.
