Freeway from ZacWare is the most advanced Open Source eCommerce platform and includes an array of features not found in extremely expensive commercial systems.
Instead of buying a large commercial system and then paying a developer to build custom installation, Freeway does most of what you need out of the box.
For example, instead of getting dragged into purchasing an overpriced products based system and having a developer struggle for weeks and eventually fail to force products sales into event sales, Freeway already support events and services and subscriptions.
Freeway is installed on a webserver alongside PHP, and you work with it through a web browser - like Internet Explorer or Firefox - you "run" Freeway on the server.

System requirements:
- Webserver: Webserver Apache. We strongly recommend a recent release. (Microsoft IIS may not funtion on new releases as we develop primarily on Apache)
- Middleware: PHP4.3.9 at least. We recommend a fully patched version 5
- Database, core system: MySQL 4.1.12 at least. We recommend a fully patched version 5
- Hardware: A normal webserver setup will do, with some modern CPU and at least 256 MB RAM. As with all database-driven applications, more RAM is advisable though.
- Optional - but recommended - webserver software extras: A PHP-cache (eg. PHP-accelerator / Zend Accelerator, UNIX only)
- Optional - but recommended - High-performance setups will want to make use of load-balancing.
