OpenEMR Server 3.1 is a free yet efficient medical practice management, electronic medical records, prescription writing, and medical billing application. The clinical benefits of computerized medical records are clear; however, the costs of current proprietary systems are large. These high cost systems inhibit many small practices from transitioning to computerized medical records. This obstacle can easily be circumvented with OpenEMR. OpenEMR is licensed under the General Gnu Public License (General GPL). It is a free open source replacement for medical applications such as Medical Manager, Health Pro, and Misys. It features support for EDI billing to clearing houses such as MedAvant and ZirMED using ANSI X12. EHR Live has taken the software and was able to support it on a secure web based infrastructure so clinics throughout the world can use the software without any IT knowledge or support.
