The vOICe for Android 0.57

The vOICe for Android 0.57 provides you with an useful and modern application which helps you translate live views from an Android camera phone into sounds that you hear via the phones speaker or headset, thus targeting sensory substitution applications for the totally blind, and even synthetic vision.

The vOICe uses pitch for height and loudness for brightness in a left to right scan of any view. Includes talking color identifier and talking compass.

The vOICe for Android should run on Android-based camera phones like the T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream), T-Mobile G2, HTC Magic, Qiji i6, Lenovo Ophone and Sciphone Dream G2 (all untested except for G1). For installation instructions consult your Android phone manual.

The vOICe automatically uses the Text-To-Speech Library (APK file available from TTS-for-Android) developed by Charles Chen and T.V. Raman, if installed, thereby supplementing its built-in speech with nearly complete screen-reader-like accessibility for menu and dialogs (tip: use the trackball to only change focus).

Once started, The vOICe for Android will continuously grab and sound snapshots from the camera. Each camera snapshot is sounded via a polyphonic left-to-right scan through the snapshot while associating height with pitch and brightness with loudness. For example, a bright rising line on a dark background sounds as a rising pitch sweep, and a small bright spot sounds as a short beep. This approach allows for sounding arbitrary images while largely preserving the image content as needed in sensory substitution for the blind.
