The vOICe for Android 0.60 description
The vOICe for Android 0.60 makes it easy to translate live views from an Android camera phone into sounds that you hear via the phones speaker or headset, thus targeting sensory substitution applications for the totally blind, and even synthetic vision.
The vOICe uses pitch for height and loudness for brightness in a left to right scan of any view. Includes a talking color identifier, talking compass and GPS based talking locator.
Once started, The vOICe for Android will continuously grab and sound snapshots from the camera. Each camera snapshot is sounded via a polyphonic left-to-right scan through the snapshot while associating height with pitch and brightness with loudness. For example, a bright rising line on a dark background sounds as a rising pitch sweep, and a small bright spot sounds as a short beep. This approach allows for sounding arbitrary images while largely preserving the image content as needed in sensory substitution for the blind.Note that you may still run into unimplemented features and bugs, as development is ongoing, while testing on physical phones has been very limited due to limited availability of Android phones. The physical phones themselves will likely have various firmware bugs and other issues as well. Take care also that The vOICe for Android, as a CPU-intensive application, may drain your phone's battery relatively quickly. Android compiler developers may benchmark and analyze how interpreted Dalvik bytecode performs as compared to JIT compiled native code with this burst-mode CPU-intensive application (see also an early G1 benchmark), or to what extent ARM Jazelle hardware acceleration would improve performance - if and once supported (i.e., JTEK licensed from ARM). For best augmented reality experience, The vOICe for Android should be applied as a video visor with low-power head-mounted camera and stereo headphones, much like the video visors in "Big data: The next Google" (Nature, 2008). The vOICe for Android turns any Android camera phone into a smart camera companion, a stand-alone computer vision system where all image processing and audio synthesis is done by the phone.

The vOICe for Android also needs further work from Google engineers to improve the computational efficiency and power efficiency of Google Android.
