Time boxing is a time management technique common in software development projects to plan out a project, for example the creation of a new IT system, by splitting the project up in a number of separate time periods (normally two to six weeks long). Each part has its own deadline and its own budget. By incrementally finishing one part at a time, a project can be successfully delivered.
The important thing about time boxing is that the dates are not flexible, but the deliverables are. Without time boxing, when the deliverables cannot be delivered, the deadline slips. With time boxing, the deadline is fixed, and the deliverables are adjusted. This goes hand-in-hand with MoSCoW prioritization of deliverables. Time Boxing is a core element of the rapid application development software development process and of DSDM, (Dynamic Systems Development Method)

Main features:
- Traffic light reporting - this gives you a high level overview of all your timeboxes at a glance, and highlights problems that need intervention.

- Timebox dashboard – this is a visual cue to alert you to any issues:
- It shows actual progress against estimates.
- It gives a quick view of your available resource and shows time left until
- delivery date.
- It highlights situations that could jeopardise project delivery.

- Task log - this lists your projects requirements/tasks and current prioritisation levels, allowing you to reprioritise to achieve your deadlines.

- Timebox resourcing - this shows the availability of resources and alerts you to any potential resourcing issues before they occur.

- Drag and Drop - Extensive use is made of drag and drop techniques, for example to move tasks in and out of timeboxes, and to assign resources to tasks.

- New Project Wizard - When you first open the application you have the option to create a new project using the Wizard. Simply enter the project title and the numbers of timeboxes, tasks and resources required. Having created the project you just rename the timeboxes, tasks and resources, and drag task into timeboxes and resources to tasks (to assign the work to that individual).

- Familiar User Interface - The application is structured so as to be familiar to users of Windows and Microsoft products, for example with an explorer style tree structure in the left hand pane. The colour settings can be altered to look similar to different version of Microsoft Office.

- Integration to Mindjet MindManager - Through a free add-in for Mindjet MindManager Pro 7, users can Import/Export TimeBox and MindManager Data for dual view and manipulation of Project Information.
