Each UPC barcode represents a 12 digit number. The last digit is a checksum, and the checksum calculation requires a computer program. Our bar code utility and macros calculate checksums and automatically format barcodes for you. There are two different kinds of UPC bar codes, UPC-A and UPC-E. The UPC-A barcode is 12 digits long, including its checksum. UPC-E bar codes are special shortened versions of UPC-A barcodes and are 6 digits long. Both UPC-A and UPC-E bar codes may have optional 2 or 5 digit supplemental codes appended to them. Each of these scalable bar code fonts comes in six different aspect ratios, so you can make a bar code of virtually any size. Our UPC bar code samples page displays examples of each type of bar code.
