Cerebware Vocab Trainer 13.64

Cerebware Vocab Trainer 13.64 is released as a proper and easy to learn tool which tracks student progress, storing a record of each word tested, and returns to items causing difficulty. It provides hints in response to incorrect answers, including real-time colour formatting of the answer for very tricky items - type the wrong letter and the answer goes red. To assist memorisation of gender, nouns are presented in gender-specific colours. The trainer reverts to multiple choice when an item is particularly difficult or a student is struggling.

Based on the principle that learning is most efficient at a 90% success rate, the program mixes easy and difficult items in a continuously monitored training session, and it automatically schedules items for revision, so that items gradually ascend from 'unknown' to 'known' to 'mastered'. Users can set learning targets, with number of words to be learned per week, and the trainer will monitor and graph progress. The learning algorithm is explained in detail here. 

The content is fully adaptable: users or teachers can add their own lists, link the vocabulary to sentences from a novel, and add both contextual and pronunciation audio. Licensed users will receive new vocabulary lists and grammar lessons as they become available but any user can write their own grammar lessons and tests, edit individual items, or exchange vocabulary lists with other users. Any text file containing German can be entered into the program and new words extracted and defined automatically. The user interface has been used with great success by children as young as 8.
