Submarines were a much feared weapon of the German Navy in the Second World War. During the first half of the war, the submarine fleet was very successful in causing major damage to the Allied naval forces and was able to disrupt important supply lines at sea. Only much later on in the war did the Allies develop effective strategies to detect and combat German submarines, causing the hunters to become the hunted.
