A very cost effective solution for building and managing time table systems for schools TTMS is a very cost effective solution for building and managing time table systems for schools.
TTMSs automated time table building capability is able to reduce time needed to build time tables from 5 days to 30 minutes.
Main features:
- TTMS is supporting a concept called “virtual school”. Virtual school is a model of the school you build giving the information needed to make time tables.
- You can build the virtual school in a very user friendly manner. After building the virtual school, you can navigate inside it very easily.
- Virtual school is not only to be used to build time tables. It represents an overview of the actual school. (For an example it shows what are the grades and classes and how teachers are assigned to classes).
- After building the virtual school, the next step is error checking. TTMS employees a grate error checker which not only finds errors of the system, but also provides suggestions to correct them. And also it finds inconsistencies in the design that may fail the building process and show them as warnings.
- Many time table management systems in Sri Lanka do not provide a way to build time tables automatically. Even though some of them can do this, they consume a lot of time and memory. That where the TTMS comes handy. Time table building ability is the greatest strength of it. The reason for that is TTMS has built on very powerful algorithms, to make this process, less time and memory consuming.
- The other grate feature of the program is that it doesn’t force the user to build all the time tables completely in building process. User can stop building process any time and use the other tools provided with TTMS to build rest of the time tables.
- TTMS provide two methods to build time tables [Build and Build (safe)]. Build (safe) is the safe mode of the normal building process. It is suitable for a computer low in speed and memory. But the performance of the building process is reduced. That means user has to use other tools to complete building time tables.
- After the building process TTMS let user to edit time tables. That means moving the periods in time table. TTMS guide the user in a way that the changes don’t make any crashes. While editing time tables TTMS shows the user an activity list. So that the user can identify the changes he has done. And also it provides a mode called “Cheating” for editing time tables. In cheating mode the user is not restricted by crashes. He can change the time table even though they give rise to any crashes. After doing this user can use crash viewer and fixer to correct crashes. (These features will be described later).
- In the section (6), we told you that the user doesn’t need to build time tables completely in the building phase. If the user stopped the process in the middle that can generate some periods in time tables which no subject is assigned. Even in this kind of situation user can continue building time tables. At this point user can use force assign option to assign appropriate subjects to these periods, and then use crash viewer and fixer to correct crashes.
- Crash viewer and fixer are the other strengths of TTMS. Many time table management systems provide a way to find crashes. But doesn’t provide a way to fix them. But TTMS provides both. Crash viewer of TTMS finds all the crashes in seconds and displays them. For fixing crashes TTMS provide two crash fixers, based on two different algorithms. Quick Fix is a very fast way to fix crashes. It looks into 40x40 possibilities for each crash. The other option is based on a very powerful algorithm. It looks in to 40x80x3 possibilities to fix each crash.
- In a time table, teachers like to have double periods. But for the person who builds time tables, arranging double periods is a nightmare. To solve this problem TTMS provides the user a way to make double periods. There is an option called rearrange. This, results more double periods without making any crashes.
- TTMS not only build class time tables, it also builds time tables for teachers. These teacher time tables are very effective when manually editing time tables.
- The next issue is getting outputs of the time tables. TTMS provides you an option called “HTML writer” which writes the time tables generated by TTMS into HTML files. Both class time tables and teacher time tables are saved in that manner. So the user can take printouts of those.
- Security always plays a big role in any system. So we build TTMS in a way that it could be used in administrator mode or user mode. To build a virtual school and time tables, user should be in administrator mode. After building time tables, users can login to system in user mode and view time tables but not edit them.
- Another feature of TTMS is data file manager. User can build virtual schools and save them as data files. These can be restored later. This feature gives the ability to manage several virtual schools. And also this let the user to backup current virtual school with all its time tables and builds a different set of time tables for a particular period of the year. This gives many schools ability to manage their time tables through out the year in a way they can use particular period of the year as effective as possible.
