Text files are widely accepted as the intermediate data storage format for transferring data between systems and software tools. Therefore, the internal structure of such files could vary dramatically and usually contains a mixture of data and formatting information.
The task of converting data into a different format requires definition of rules for the procedure based on some preliminary description of the input and output formats. It involves two aspects: identification of data elements and transformation rules. The identification of data elements is usually done using field/record delimiters and/or tags, while transformation rules in most cases require programming.
The market offers a variety of tools for simple cases such as import/conversion of commonly used CSV (Comma Separated Values) and similar files. This format assumes a plain data structure (no hierarchy), no formatting except for field delimiters and text qualifiers, and an “end of line” symbol as a record delimiter
