MovieSafe 1.0

Moviesafe is based around the Java Media Framework (JMF) which is a free standard Java extension from SUN. It is necessary to have the the free Java 2 runtime installed as well as the free Sun JMF to create MovieSafe applets (but not to run the applets). It is best to select the JMF "performance pack" for your particular platform (eg. for Windows) otherwise use the cross-platform (ie. pure Java) JMF.
Applets can have the JMF player for Quicktime included inside the applet which means the target browser doesn't need to have the JMF plugin installed. This is a good solution for Quicktime however this won't work for MPEG. MPEG requires that the target browser have the JMF plugin installed.

A lot of page authoring is now done with HTML editors like Frontpage. Some users may find it tricky to cut and paste the HTML of an MovieSafe applet so MovieSafe provides the option for the correct HTML to be put directly into the system clipboard. Once there, clicking the Windows right mouse button and doing a paste operation can move the HTML directly into the HTML editor's "insert HTML" dialog.

Major Features:

1. Movies can be run only from a designated website
2. Movies cant be retrieved from the cache and wont run locally or on another server
3. Movies are further compressed inside the applet
4. Quicktime movies don't need Quicktime installed as a 275K movie player can be included in the applet
5. Embedded Quicktime movie player can run with any Java 1.1 or better Java VM
6. MPEG and AVI formats are supported but are best suited to intranets since they require a browser plugin
7. A view-by date can be specified after which the movies will no longer run
8. Movies can open another URL when clicked on. This allows repeating quicktime movie advertisements to be embedded into web pages.
