The first ping program was written by Mike Muuss in December 1983 for use on Unix machines.
Muuss named his program after the sonar sounds used for echolocation by submarines, although some say ping stands for "Packet InterNet Grouper".
Ping sends a small packet of information containing an ICMP ECHO_REQUEST to a specified computer, which then sends an ECHO_REPLY packet in return. The ping program then evaluates this reply, and a report is shown.
You can check several things with the ping program: can you reach another computer, how long does it take to bounce a packet off of another site (what is the distance),
You can ping either a domain name, or an IP address. Functionality to show domain names when using IP addresses is supported. Even routing options are available, alas only 9 routes can be shown due to the structure of the IP header (RFC 792). Why did I write my own ping program?
There are two main reasons: a) It wanted to know how the ping program worked. I found it really intriguing and was very curious and b) There was a need for a better ping program here at the lab where I work.
Main features:
- Time between pings can be adjusted as needed from 1ms to 5s.
- Beep on every successful or unsuccessful reply allowing you to test your network status in the background.
- Ping multiple hosts with one simple command.
- Read a hostlist from a file
- Output redirection to a file for parsing.
- Ping with random data, or data you provide
- Ping using raw sockets, or use the ICMP dll. The choice is up to you.

Osiva is a smart and reliable image display and compositing tool.
Osiva was written to replace the default Windows image viewer. The result is a slightly cryptic user interface hack. Osiva looks simple, but as you use it you can find more and more to do with it.
Use it to compare and organize digital photos, create a slide show, animate a JPEG list, or composite collage and dissolve effects without windows and controls getting in the way. Images are treated as independent, tangible objects. Osiva can also display image transparency directly on the desktop.
How do you use it?
Drag and drop images into Osiva. You can drop images onto any image window or the icon bar.You can also make Osiva the default viewer for JPG and GIF images.
An image is initially shown at its actual pixel size. Click on the image and it turns into a thumbnail. Click again and it toggles back to actual size. Move the image by grabbing it with the left mouse button. Resize the image by grabbing the lower left corner. Rotate the image by grabbing the top and pulling. Drag & Drop the image out of Osiva by grabbing it with the right mouse button.
The initial Osiva logo or "splash" image is an image like any other. Close it or drop an image on top of it to replace it.
How do you save your work?
There are three ways to save your work. You can save a file containing the current layout of images. When you reopen the layout file the images are opened and returned to their saved positions. You can "consolidate" the current set of images into a new folder. Consolidation will copy the images and create a matching layout file. Or you can just press the Windows "Print Screen" key and copy the entire screen image into the clip board. This is useful for making quick composites and panoramas that fit on the screen.

It will detect that you have saved an HTML document, query the browser for URL and "inject" the URL into the document you have saved as a clickable link on top of the file. (Works with Netscape Navigator and MS Internet Explorer.)
You may find this program helpful if you often download articles from the Internet (using a Web browser, such as Netscape or MS Internet Explorer) and sometimes wish to return to online copies of those documents later, when you may have already deleted or lost the URL address.
The task that InjectURL performs is automatically adding ("injecting") the URLs into HTML and plain-text documents you have downloaded and saved, using the browsers "Save As..." feature.
This way you can always know where that particular document came from without having to keep the URLs somewhere else or manually editing the document.
When you save a document from your browser, InjectURL will detect this, query the browser for the actual URL of the document you have just saved, and will inject that URL into the document in a variety of ways.
When you later open that saved document in your browser, the URL pointing to the original document on the Internet will be shown on top. Clicking it will enable you to load the original version (if it still exists at the same address).
