Whenever a connection attempt is made using a hostname address, Windows must first convert that hostname into an IP address before the connection is made.
By using the built in hosts index provided by Microsoft Windows, when a connection attempt is made to a hostname address it first checks this index for the IP. If it doesnt exist in the hosts index, a DNS lookup process is initiated. This process can slow down the connection between you and the host by up to several seconds, especially if the network is busy.
