Picalo 4.12
Picalo is a data analysis application, with focus in fraud detection and data retrieved from corporate databases. more>>
Picalo is currently focused on data analysis for fraud and corruption detection. However, it is an open framework that could actually be used for many different types of data analysis: network logs, any type of database-oriented data, scientific data and data mining.
Picalo is built upon a three-level architecture, including open source and potentially closed source parts.
Detectlets are one of the most exciting parts of the Picalo architecture. They allow non-programmers to run analysis routines created by others. See the detectlets page for more information.
Picalo is built upon the shoulders of many great projects. Thousands of individuals have contributed time and energy to these projects, and the Picalo effort is grateful for their work. These are listed as follows:
- Python
- wxPython
- mxDateTime
- Python Windows Extensions
- Statistics package pstat.py by Gary Strangman
- Nuvola Icon Set by David Vignoni
- Gadfly Python Database
- Matplotlib
What about quality control? Another way to phrase this question is, "Can I trust Picalos results?" The short answer is you can trust Picalo as much as any analysis application. We take quality control very seriously.
The long answer is you should never fully trust any analysis application. You should always double check each step of the process, print control totals, and manually ensure that your routines are doing what you think they are. It can be very embarrasing (and dangerous) to make decisions on faulty analysis routines.
Users unfamiliar with the open source world may implicitly trust "corporate" software and be wary of "open" software. We hope you will re-evaluate this common misconception as you use Picalo.
Certainly, closed-source software applications are often more user friendly than community-built applications. But "good looking" and easy-to-use programs are not necessarily trustworthy.
As more users test Picalo and more developers help program it, well have a lot of eyes looking through the code and testing the routines. Open source software often finds and fixes bugs much faster than closed-source software because of the number of individuals looking at its code. "Corporate" software is often written by small development teams who are driven by marketing calendars and new features.
The open source world has many examples of incredibly well-written software, including Linux (widely known for crashing very rarely), PostgreSQL (a highly-respected database), Apache (which runs most of the web), Bind (which runs the domain names on the Internet), KDE and Gnome (excellent user interfaces that look similar to Windows), wxWidgets (the GUI toolkit Picalo is built upon), Perl and Python and GCC (programming languages many "real" programs are written with), LaTeX (a great word processing platform), and Firefox (an incredible web browser). This list could go on with thousands of successful open source products that are in production use today.
In summary, is Picalo perfect? Of course not. There may even be one or two bugs left in the Level 1 routines of Picalo. But were working to make it a world-class analysis application that encodes information about thousands of fraud schemes used worldwide. Consider helping out to be part of the team that makes Picalo better and better.
BGInfo 4.12
Automatically generates desktop backgrounds that include important information about the system including IP addresses... more>>
How many times have you walked up to a system in your office and needed to click through several diagnostic windows to remind yourself of important aspects of its configuration, such as its name, IP address, or operating system version?
If you manage multiple computers you probably need BGInfo. It automatically displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktops background, such as the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more.
You can edit any field as well as the font and background colors, and can place it in your startup folder so that it runs every boot, or even configure it to display as the background for the logon screen.
Because all BGInfo does is to simply write a new desktop bitmap and exit, you dont have to worry about it consuming your system resources or interfering with other programs.
By placing BGInfo in your Startup folder you can ensure that the system information being displayed is up to date each time you boot. Once youve settled on the information to be displayed use the command line option /timer:0 to update the display without showing the dialog box.
You can also use the Windows Scheduler to run BGInfo on a regular basis to ensure long-running systems are kept up to date.
If you create a BGInfo configuration file (using the File|Save Settings menu item) you can automatically import and use those settings on other systems by adding the /I or /iq command line option.
Main features:
Appearance Buttons
- Fields: Selects what information appears on the desktop, and the order in which it is displayed. For networking fields (NIC, IP, MAC, etc.) a separate entry is created for each network card on the system. Use the Custom button to add special information you define yourself.
- Background: Selects the color and/or wallpaper to use for the background. If you select the Copy existing settings option then BGInfo will use whatever information is currently selected by the logged on user. This option allows end users to personalize their desktop while still displaying the BGInfo information.
- Position: Selects the location on the screen at which to place the text. If some items are very long (for example some network card names) you can use the Limit Lines to item to wrap them. The Compensate for Taskbar position checkbox adjusts the position of the text to ensure that it is not covered by the Taskbar. The Multiple Monitor Configuration button allows you to specify how multiple monitors attached to a single console should be handled.
- Desktops: Selects which desktops are updated when the configuration is applied. By default only the User Desktop wallpaper is changed. Enabling the Logon Desktop for Console users option specifies that the wallpaper should be displayed on the logon desktop that is presented before anyone has logged onto the system. On Windows 95/98/ME systems the same desktop is used for users and the login screen, so this option has no effect. Enabling the Logon Desktop for Terminal Services users option specifies that the wallpaper should be displayed on the Terminal Services login screen. This option is useful only on servers running Terminal Services.
- Preview: Displays the background as it will appear when applied to your system.
Configuration Menu Items
These are options that control how the bitmap is produced, where it is located and how to import/export settings.
- File | Open: Opens a BGInfo configuration file.
- File | Save As: Saves a copy of the current BGInfo configuration to a new file. Once created, you can have BGInfo use the file later by simply specifying it on the command line, or by using File|Open menu option.
- File|Reset Default Settings: Removes all configuration information and resets BGInfo to its default (install-time) state. Use this if you cant determine how to undo a change, or if BGInfo becomes confused about the current state of the bitmap.
- File|Database: Specifies a .XLS, .MDB or .TXT file or a connection string to an SQL database that BGInfo should use to store the information it generates. Use this to collect a history of one or more systems on your network. You must ensure that all systems that access the file have the same version of MDAC and JET database support installed. It is recommended you use at least MDAC 2.5 and JET 4.0. If specifying an XLS file the file must already exist.
If you prefer to have BGInfo update the database without modifying the users wallpaper you can unselect all desktops in the Desktops dialog; BGInfo will still update the database.
- Bitmap|256 Colors: Limits the bitmap to 256 colors. This option produces a smaller bitmap.
- Bitmap|High Color/True Color: Creates a 16-bit or 24-bit color bitmap.
- Bitmap|Match Display: Creates a bitmap with color depth matching that of the display. Because the bitmap generated by BGInfo is not updated when a user changes the displays color depth you may see unexpected results (especially dithering of the text and background) with some combinations of bitmap and display depth.
- Bitmap|Location: Specifies the location to place the output bitmap file. On Terminal Services servers the bitmap should be placed in a location that is unique to each user.
- Edit|Insert Image: Allows you to insert a bitmap image into the output. Because BGInfos configuration information is stored in the registry and Windows limits the size of registry values you may encounter errors when inserting larger images. On Windows 9x/Me systems the limit is 16K, while on NT/2000/XP systems the limit is 64K.

msmtp 1.4.12
msmtp is an open source SMTP client more>>
To use this program with your mail user agent (MUA), create a configuration file with your mail account(s) and tell your MUA to call msmtp instead of /usr/sbin/sendmail.
In addition to sendmail mode, there are two other modes of operation:
- Server information mode. In this mode, msmtp prints as much information as it can get about a given SMTP server (supported features, maximum mail size, ...).
- Remote Message Queue Starting mode. In this mode, msmtp sends a Remote Message Queue Starting request for a host, domain, or queue to a given SMTP server.
Normally, a system wide configuration file and/or a user configuration file contain information about which SMTP server to use and how to use it , but almost all settings can also be configured on the command line.
The information about SMTP servers is organized in accounts. Each account describes one SMTP server: host name, TLS settings, authentication settings, and so on. Each configuration file can define multiple accounts.
Optional features, depending on external libraries (see the file INSTALL for
usage instructions):
- TLS/SSL support
You need either GnuTLS >= 1.2.0 or OpenSSL >= 0.9.6 for TLS/SSL support. It is also possible to disable TLS/SSL support entirely.
- Additional authentication methods
The built-in authentication code supports the PLAIN, LOGIN, CRAM-MD5, and EXTERNAL mechanisms. When GNU SASL support is enabled, some or all of the mechanisms EXTERNAL, GSSAPI, DIGEST-MD5, CRAM-MD5, PLAIN, LOGIN, and NTLM are available, depending on the compile-time options used for libgsasl. GNU SASL >= 0.2.4 is required.
- Native language support (NLS)
On systems other than GNU/Linux, you need GNU gettext if you want NLS.
Main features:
- Sendmail compatible interface (command line options and exit codes).
- Authentication methods PLAIN, LOGIN, CRAM-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, GSSAPI, and NTLM.
- TLS/SSL both in SMTP-over-SSL mode and in STARTTLS mode. Full certificate trust checks can be performed. A client certificate can be sent.
- Fast SMTP implementation using command pipelining.
- Support for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN).
- DSN (Delivery Status Notification) support.
- RMQS (Remote Message Queue Starting) support (ETRN keyword).
- IPv6 support.
- Support for multiple accounts.
