Measuring Window GUI Response parameters has always been a difficult and challenging task which UI SPY tries to revolutionize.
Every Button Click in windows is linked to some piece of code which is executed in the background (this code varies depending on the application). The code often referred to as the handler function determines the response time for the specific action using the GUI.
For Simplicity we can broadly classify the UI Response characteristics into 3 categories as shown below
A Response that involves creating another child window (for example, clicking on a button causes another window to open, on which you can operate)
A Response that involves some background computation without popping up a child window (a button click , that leads to some sort of data processing)
A Response that involves background computation and also spawns a child window on which you can further operate.
Well its quite obvious that the efficiency and effectiveness of the code underneath is exposed/brought out to the end user via the GUI and hence measuring the Software performance based on UI forms an important aspect of performance measurement. When an application is reviewed for performance by 3rd party organization, most of the functionality is going to be accessed and benchmarked via the UI,( the likelihood of running black box / API tests are remote,) hence you have to make sure that "End-to-End" performance as measured via exercising the functionality through the UI is at it max. Most of the major companies have stringent constraints on the UI Response times.
