Microsoft Windows 2000 Authentication Flaw Could A Q313450
An SMTP service installs by default as part of Windows 2000 server products and as part of the Internet Mail Connector (IMC) for Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 more>> An SMTP service installs by default as part of Windows 2000 server products and as part of the Internet Mail Connector (IMC) for Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. (The IMC, also known as the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service, provides access and message exchange to and from any system that uses SMTP). A vulnerability results in both services because of a flaw in the way they handle a valid response from the NTLM authentication layer of the underlying operating system.
By design, the Windows 2000 SMTP service and the Exchange Server 5.5 IMC, upon receiving notification from the NTLM authentication layer that a user has been authenticated, should perform additional checks before granting the user access to the service. The vulnerability results because the affected services dont perform this additional checking correctly. In some cases, this could result in the SMTP service granting access to a user solely on the basis of their ability to successfully authenticate to the server.
An attacker who exploited the vulnerability could gain only user-level privileges on the SMTP service, thereby enabling the attacker to use the service but not to administer it. The most likely purpose in exploiting the vulnerability would be to perform mail relaying via the server.

Windows NT Remote Registry Access Authentication Vulnerability
Windows NT Remote Registry Access Authentication Vulnerability has come as a helpful program to deal with a security vulnerability in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. more>>
Windows NT Remote Registry Access Authentication Vulnerability has come as a helpful program to deal with a security vulnerability in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. This vulnerability can allow access to the Registry from a remote computer. The remote computer must be authenticated by a remote Registry server before it can be processed. If a request is malformed in a specific fashion, the request is misinterpreted by the remote Registry server, causing it not to work.
Because the remote Registry server runs within the Winlogon.exe system process in Windows NT 4.0, a problem in that process causes problems with the entire system. Only an authenticated user can run such a request. An anonymous (or null-session) connection cannot cause this problem. You can place an affected computer back in service by rebooting the computer.
A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT 4.0 service pack that contains this fix.

Supported Data Acquisition Methods
Depending on your infrastructure you can monitor the usage of your network using different methods supported by PRTG Traffic Grapher. You can choose between four common methods for (bandwidth) monitoring:
-SNMP: Simple Network Management Protocol is the basic method of gathering bandwidth and network usage data. It can be used to monitor bandwidth usage of routers and switches port-by-port as well as device readings like memory, CPU load etc. Supports SNMP Version 1, 2c and 3.
-Packet Sniffing: The Packet Sniffer inspects all network data packets passing the PCs network card(s) and is able to classify network traffic by IP address, protocol and other parameters
-Netflow: The Netflow protocol is supported by most Cisco routers to measure bandwidth usage. Although being the most complex type to set up it is also the most powerful method suitable for high traffic networks and can also classify network traffic by IP address, protocol and other parameters.
-Latency: Monitoring performance of a data line or a device by measuring PING times
-Note: Only with packet sniffer and netflow based monitoring it is possible to measure the traffic by IP address, and/or protocol. SNMP based traffic measurement is port-based only.
