Place your bird cage in an area near a corner or wall to give your bird a comfortable place to relax, but in an area where there will be a lot of human interaction. The family room is a great choice, since your bird can watch what's going on and interact, but won't be in the middle of everything.
Elevate the cage instead of putting it on the floor - chest height is ideal. Avoid placing the cage immediately next to a window, though within viewing range is a good idea, so your bird can watch what happens outside.
