FontChecksum is a Java 1.4 application to verify the internal checksums in OpenType and TrueType font files.
Sometimes when you download a file, or copy a file from a worn CD/DVD, what you receive differs from the original. After downloading or copying twice, you may have two files with the same size, the same date, and the same apparent contents.
When compared byte-by-byte with commands such as "comp" on DOS/Windows or "cmp" on UNIX, only a few bits or bytes are different. The rest of the files are the same.
Your question is which file is correct. One of them must be wrong. (Both could be wrong!) Since font files contain internal checksums, you can use this information to test which of the files is more correct.
The freeware and shareware fonts that are produced with older font tools have numerous checksum errors.

File Checksum (Java) 3.0 brings a feature-rich and trustworthy Java 1.4 application to compute common checksums for files: CRC32, MD5, and SHA1. Checksums are small hexadecimal "signatures" for testing whether or not files have been copied correctly, such as over a network. One person sends a file along with the checksum computed on the original computer.
A second person calculates a similar checksum for the received file, and if the two checksums agree, then the received file is assumed to be correct. MD5 is more reliable than and preferred over the older and simpler CRC32. Many web sites provide MD5 signatures for their downloads; use this program to verify files that you download. Please read the PDF documentation included in the ZIP file. This program has been released under the GNU General Public License.
