Sylpheed 2.7 won't make you disappointed cause it is used as an e-mail client and news reader based on GTK+ GUI toolkit, and runs on X Window System.

Latest changes: the automatic filtering of new messages in INBOX folder of IMAP4 account was implemented; junk mails are now filtered when incorporating from local spool; UTF-8 is forced for headers instead of substituting characters if the code conversion failed.

   • The every portion of Sylpheed is implemented by C language (no interpreter or virtual machine), so there is no sluggishness.
5. High reliability
   • The stability and the protection of data is taken into account to the fullest extent because they are the most important factors for e-mail clients. Storing several ten thousands of messages doesn't affect the stability. Even if the application is forcibly terminated, there is almost no possibility of the lost of mail, or inconsistent state of mailboxes.
   • Messages are managed with MH format on which a file corresponds to a message, so you can easily backup, migrate, and process them with other applications. There is also less risk of mail loss when a system failure occurs, compared to formats on which a file corresponds to a folder. Messages are instantly moved or deleted with this format when asked to, so users don't have to perform periodic compaction of mailboxes by hand to prevent the growth of mailboxes.
6. Powerful filtering and search
   • You can perform various processings for sent/received messages by using the powerful filtering feature.
   • Any headers, message body, size, date, flag status, and external commands can be specified as the conditions of a filter. For actions as conditions match, move, copy, delete from server, setting flags, the execution of external commands, etc. can be performed.
   • Sylpheed also has powerful search function which utilizes this filtering engine. Moreover, you can easily refer to the messages which matches search conditions by saving the result as a search folder. It also has the quick search function which quickly narrows down the message list by flag types and subject strings.
7. Junk mail control: Sylpheed has a learning-type junk mail control feature which utilizes external commands. You can automatically filter junk mails without setting filter rules by hand, so you don't have to worry about being buried in the flood of junk mail anymore. It also has high flexibility. Other than the bogofilter and bsfilter, which are the default, you can use any programs as the external commands. The standard programs can be easily used from Sylpheed by just installing them.
8. Internationalization and multilingualization support, and high-level Japanese processing:
   
   • Sylpheed supports internationalization (i18n) and multilingualization (m17n) (currently translated to 30 languages). The internal editor also implements internationalized line-wrapping.
   • Sylpheed also supports the high-level Japanese processing, such as the stable character encoding conversion by using the original implementation, code guessing (ISO-2022-JP/EUC-JP/Shift_JIS/UTF-8), and the support for the environment-dependent characters.
9. Various protocols support: Sylpheed supports not only the major protocols such as POP3, IMAP4rev1 and SMTP, but also NNTP (NetNews). IPv6, which is the next-generation Internet protocol, is also supported by default.
10. Security features (GnuPG, SSL/TLSv1): Sylpheed optionally supports the signing and encryption of messages by GnuPG, and the encrypted communication of POP3/IMAP4/NNTP over SSL/TLSv1.
11. Flexible cooperation with external commands
    • You can call external commands and cooperate with them in various circumstance. The Action feature can be used as a filter by passing the currently selected messages to external commands. You can use external editors in the message composition. You can also utilize external commands for the filtering on receiving messages.
    • If the receiving feature of Sylpheed is not enough, you can even use fetchmail and/or procmail, or external commands (such as inc, imget) for receiving.

Enhancements:

• The plug-in system was implemented (still experimental. See PLUGIN.txt for detail).
• LibSylph (internal version) is built as shared library now.
• The update check feature was implemented (requires curl command, included in Windows installer).
• fsync() will be called after writing configuration files.
• 'Send queued messages' is shown instead of 'Mark all read' in the context menu of the Queue folder.
• The default command line options of spam filters were modified.
• Win32: Hard link will be used to improve file I/O performance if available.
• Win32: bsfilter is included in the installer now. If you have installed bsfilter at another location, please note that the location of database files might change.
• Win32: Install/uninstall will be aborted if Sylpheed is running.
• Win32: The registration of Start menu will be applied to all users.
• Win32: The installer cannot launch Sylpheed anymore when install finishes (for Vista).
• A crash bug on CSV import of the address book was fixed.
• Several other bugfixes were made.

Major Features:

1. FlashGot Link (contextual menu or Ctrl-F1 or Alt+Click on a link) - downloads through the default download manager the link under the mouse pointer.
2. FlashGot Selection (menu or Ctrl-F2 or Alt+Click with an active selection) - catches links in hilighted text/images, attempting also pure text to anchors conversion, performing some "smart" replacement like turning "hxxp://" into "http://".
3. Many download forums list links to password-protected archives (usually RAR or ZIP), followed by an indication of the password to open them. If you select the links and the password by dragging the text selection with your mouse, and then you use the FlashGot Selection command, the password will be passed to the download manager inside the description of the links, so you can easily retrieve it when the download is completed with no need to annotate it manually.
4. FlashGot All (menu or Ctrl-F3) - grabs all the links found in the current page and dispatches them to the default download manager, which could offer an easy interface* to filter and select the file that will be downloaded in a batch.Built-in filter dialog is provided by every Windows/Mac OS X download manager except GetRight and cURL. On Linux, your best open source native option is Downloader 4 X 2.5.4 or above. Alternatively you can try one one of the Windows-only download managers which are supported through Wine by FlashGot version 0.9.9 or above.
5. FlashGot Tabs (menu or Ctrl-F6) - performs a "FlashGot All" on every tab open in the current window. Notice that this command is hidden by default from the context menu: you can show it using the Menu options.
6. FlashGot Media (menu or Ctrl-F7) - it's enabled only when a streaming video or audio clip is playing in the current browser tab: this command intercepts downloadable addresses of the content pieces played so far in the page and sends them to the download manager. Tested on Youtube movies, it should work in many other situations as well. Furthermore, when a video or audio content is intercepted and ready for FlashGot media, a status bar icon flashes as a notification: you can either left click it to download all the streams at once, or right click to choose among multiple streams, if more than one have been found.

Enhancements:

• Fixes broken progress bar and no link sent if a Megaupload link is in the batch and user is not logged in.
