Used on Hands on the Lands environmental monitoring web site, this Flash-based data mapping tool allows web developers to create custom maps based on delineated data. It uses National Atlas vector-based boundaries data for the US states. Zooming is performed by a single click on the map. Click, hold and drag to pan the map in any direction. A drop-down menu is also available to move users directly to Alaska and Hawaii. Plotted data may contain four levels of information: dot size, dot color, mouse-over text and an optional link. Hyperlinked datasets may also be associated with custom data. Dot color, legend information, map title and the explanatory paragraph may also be customized. The city database provided with this tool contains US cities with populations greater than 100k and at least one well-known city from each state. This database is extendable. Cities are shown on the map relative to population size and zoom level?i.e., cities with fewer inhabitants are displayed when the zoom level increases. The free Macromedia Flash Player version 6.0 or greater is required for the use of this tool. Macromedia Flash MX is not required for the implementation of this tool on a web site.

Export Dataset to Excel from ASP.NET demonstrates exporting a DataSet to Excel in ASP.NET, without using the Excel object model. We did not want to install Office on the server just to get the ability to create an Excel spreadsheet.
Whats so special about this? Well, of all of the online samples we could find, none of them had any way to create multiple Worksheet tabs within the spreadsheet without using the Excel object model. Trying to fit multiple tables in a single Worksheet causes several interesting and unnacceptable formatting problems, not to mention difficulties in finding precisely the data that was desired.
This is accomplished by building and returning an XML file which is created programmatically, in an Excel-readable format. Once this file is built, it is written directly to the Response stream, and the Response ContentType and appropriate HTTP headers are set to indicate that the pages output is an Excel spreadsheet.
The resulting spreadsheet will contain a seperate Worksheet for every table in the Dataset. The Worksheet will be named the same as the corresponding Table.
This demonstration project returns all of the data in all tables of the Northwind database on the local server.

FDT is based on an asynchronous, flexible multithreaded system and is using the capabilities of the Java NIO libraries. Its main features are:
- Streams a dataset (list of files) continuously, using a managed pool of buffers through one or more TCP sockets.
- Uses independent threads to read and write on each physical device
- Transfers data in parallel on multiple TCP streams, when necessary
- Uses appropriate-sized buffers for disk I/O and for the network
- Restores the files from buffers asynchronously Resumes a file transfer session without loss, when needed
FDT can be used to stream a large set of files across the network, so that a large dataset composed of thousands of files can be sent or received at full speed, without the network transfer restarting between files.<<less
