Partition Saving 3.70
Partition Saving is a DOS program that is used to save, restore and copy hard-drive, partitions, floppy disk and DOS devices. more>>
With this program you could save all data on a partition to a file (such as you could save this file on a CD for example). Then if something goes wrong, you can completely restore the partition from the backup file. You no longer have to reinstall every piece of software from scratch. All you have to do is restore the partition from the backup file and then update any software that was modified since the backup was created.
Note: beware of software which installs or modifies files on multiple partitions (e.g. Windows programs which update the registry or DLLs that may be on other partitions). If one partition is saved or restored, you must include others (otherwise, inconsistencies could prevent software from running).
Partition Saving is able to compress data (using the gzip compression algorithm) and split it up into several files (e.g. if you need to save a 2 Gb partition onto a CD, this can be done by compressing it and, if necessary, splitting it up into 650 Mb files). Most partition types are supported. In the case of FAT (12, 16 and 32), ext2/3 and NTFS partitions, you can choose between saving all sectors or in-use sectors only.
Major Features:
- Save an element (hard disk, partition, floppy disk, device)
- Restore an element that was saved before
- Copy an element
- Copy a backup file created by this program, modifying its size or compression rate
- Verify created files
- Update partition definition in Windows 2000/XP/Vista registry
- Update BOOTSECT.DOS/BOOTSECT.BAK file
- Explore a partition
- Simulate elements with created files
- Create files on a NTFS drive under Windows for use in saving
- Cancel bad sectors information of a filesystem
Enhancements:
Released on January 18th. Major change is that it is first Linux version (DOS and Windows versions still existing). There is some constraints on this version, notably Linux version cannot save an active partition (for this you need a LiveCD). I cannot test this version on all Linux distributions and versions, mostly for 64 bits versions.
All versions are into the same file that does not need any installation (just uncompress it into a directory).
Others evolutions are:
- availability to save partitions table and all sectors of an hard disk in Windows version (you need at least Windows XP).
- availability to load options file from interface with viewing it before. A comment can also be added to options file when it is created.
- take into account of file extended access rights on ext2/ext3 partitions to allow their opening into explorer (this did not disallow their saving/restoring).
- availability to force disk size detection with depending on partitions table content. This will only concern DOS version with using the "-tds" option (note: for less than 8 Go disk, this can lead to a difference of detection with previous versions).
- remove of some checks that could disallow detection of some USB disks (note: this can lead to changes in disk numbering if USB disk is found before other ones).
- some changes into user interface.
Requirements:
Hardware:
- 386 or better
- 4 Mb of memory (could work with less, but data compression might not work). Free DOS memory must be at least 300 Kb
Software:
- DOS (version >= 3.3)

SelfImage 1.2.1.92
SelfImage - Small and free hard disk imaging utility more>>
In its current incarnation, SelfImage is capable of making an image of a hard disk partition and writing it to another - useful for making backups
Use SelfImage to create a disk image of any partition and even partitions that Windows does not recognize (Linux partitions, etc).
Additionally, when run on Windows 2000 or XP, SelfImage can create images of partitions that Windows doesnt have mounted on a drive letter. Perfect for the dual-boot system, you can create an image backup of a Linux partition directly from Windows.
Main features:
- Create 1:1 image files of any mounted (or unmounted on Windows 2000/XP) hard disk partition.
- Can create an image of an entire hard disk, including the master boot record, partition table, and all partitions (Windows 2000/XP)
- Restore previously created images to any partition, even mounted ones, as long as it doesnt have open files.
- On-the-fly compression accelerated with parallel CPU support to take advantage of todays hyperthreaded, multi-core and SMP systems.
- Skip reading a disks "free space", treating it as if it were zero. This decreases the size of a compressed image and makes it process MUCH faster. NEW Version 1.2.0 can now do this for Linux ext2/ext3 partitions as well.
- NEW Available as an experimental BartPE plugin for use in boot/rescue CDs.
- Network Block Device support to make images of disks on remote machines, and restore back to them.
- Multi-threaded design for maximum throughput and low CPU overhead.

PC Disk Clone Free 8.0
A handy cloning application more>>
Major Features:
- Clone with High Speed:
- When you clone a hard disk to another within the computer box, the transfer speed can accelerate to 7GB per minute. You wait much less time than other competitive products.
- Clone to Removable Hard Disk:
- PC Disk Clone can use a USB or Firewire(IEEE1394) cable to clone to an external drive.
- Clone any System on any File System type:
- PC Disk Clone is independent of file system formats and operating systems.
- Clone unknown, hidden or proprietary Partition Formats
- Besides the abilities to clone NTFS, FAT, EXT2, EXT3, HFS, XFS, JFS and ZFS Disk Formats, cloning can also be very successful in case of unknow, hidden, or proprietary file systems.
- Clone Dual Boot Systems:
- PC Disk Clone can copy hard disk with dual bootable systems. For instance, Windows and Linux within one hard disk can start up successfully in the backup disk.
- Necessary Tool for Data Rescue:
- PC Disk Clone can also be used for data rescue. Because hard disk with defective areas always need to be copied to another disk before any recovery procedure. Otherwise, the recovery may cause further defects resulting from the inherent exposure of the recovery operation. PC Disk Clone reduces the exposure to its minimum due to its sector copy mechanism. (Note: Only Sector copy can be used to recover data from hard drive.)
- Best Choice to migrate Systems:
- PC Disk Clone is ideal to migrate Windows Systems to new computer with the help of Microsoft Sysprep tool. After a few preparation using sysprep, Migrating Hard Disk Data, as well as eliminating the annoyance of reinstalling Windows and of loosing personal information, will become easy and efficient.
- Best Choice to Upgrade/Replace Hard Drive
- Upgrading an old disk with new one is almost the same as migrating system to new computer except the new disk drive will still be used in the same computer.
- Best Choice For Laptop Installation Backups:
- PC Disk Clone provides the possibility to create a local backup of an entire system installation for Laptops. If required, a simple restore from the backup partition brings the system installation back into its original state. Therefore, Laptops can create a partition on the unused disk space as a backup of system. After having installed the system, make a copy of the system drive to the backup drive. Then you can restore the original system partition at any time by copying in the opposite direction.
DiskInternals Linux Reader 1.1
quick access to alternative file systems more>> There are a number of evident merits of the program, which you should know. First of all, DiskInternals Linux Reader is absolutely free. Secondly, the program provides for read-only access and does not allow you to make records in Ext2/Ext3 file system partitions. This guarantees that the interference in an alterative file system will not affect the work of Linux later. Apart from this, it is necessary to note, that it gives you an opportunity to use common Windows Explorer for extracting data. A preview option for pictures is one more pleasant point, which is worth mentioning.<<less

TestDisk & PhotoRec 6.8 Beta
TestDisk is a tool to check and undelete partitions more>>
TestDisk is a free and useful program which queries the BIOS ( DOS/Win9x) or the OS ( Linux, FreeBSD) in order to find the Hard Disks and their characteristics ( LBA size and CHS geometry). TestDisk does a quick check of your disks structure and compares it with your Partition Table for entry errors. If the Partition Table has entry errors, TestDisk can repair them. If you have missing partitions or a completely empty Partition Table, TestDisk can search for partitions and create a new Table or even a new MBR if necessary.
However, its up to the user to look over the list of possible partitions found by TestDisk and to select the one(s) which were being used just before the drive failed to boot or the partition(s) were lost. In some cases, especially after initiating a detailed search for lost partitions, TestDisk may show partition data which is simply from the remnants of a partition that had been deleted and overwritten long ago.
TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, the command line parameters /log and /debug can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.
TestDisk can find lost partitions for all of these file systems:
- BeFS ( BeOS )
- BSD disklabel ( FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD )
- CramFS, Compressed File System
- DOS/Windows FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32
