Microsoft Windows 98 Patch: IP Fragment Reassembly Update is an update equipped with the ability to resolve the "IP Fragment Reassembly" security vulnerability in Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition. Installing this update will minimize the negative effects that fragmented Internet Protocol (IP) datagrams could have on your computer's central processing unit (CPU). IP datagrams are a necessary part of network and Internet communication. If a continuous stream of fragmented IP datagrams with a particular malformation were sent to an affected computer, it could be made to devote most or all of its CPU availability to processing these fragments. The vulnerability does not allow a malicious user to compromise data on the computer or usurp administrative control over it.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Patch: IP Fragment Reassembly Update is an update which can resolve the "IP Fragment Reassembly" security vulnerability in Windows 2000. Installing this update will minimize the negative effects that fragmented Internet Protocol (IP) datagrams could have on your computer's central processing unit (CPU). IP datagrams are a necessary part of network and Internet communication. If a continuous stream of fragmented IP datagrams with a particular malformation were sent to an affected computer, it could be made to devote most or all of its CPU availability to processing these fragments. The vulnerability would not allow a malicious user to compromise data on the computer or usurp administrative control over it.

A patch that eliminates a security vulnerability in Windows 95/98/NT/2000. The vulnerability could be used to cause an affected machine to temporarily stop performing useful work. The affected systems contain a flaw in the code that performs IP fragment reassembly. If a continuous stream of fragmented IP datagrams with a particular malformation were sent to an affected machine, it could be made to devote most or all of its CPU availability to processing them. The data rate needed to completely deny service varies depending on the machine and network conditions, but in most cases even relatively moderate rates would suffice. The vulnerability would not allow a malicious user to compromise data on the machine or usurp administrative control over it. Although it has been reported that the attack in some cases will cause an affected machine to crash, affected machines in all Microsoft testing returned to normal service shortly after the fragments stopped arriving. Machines protected by a proxy server or a firewall that drops fragmented packets would not be affected by this vulnerability. The machines most likely to be affected by this vulnerability would be machines located on the edge of a network such as web servers or proxy servers.

IIS5 File-Fragment Reading via Malformed HTR Request Vulnerability Patch (MS01-004) is launched as a helpful and important patch which includes new variant of the 'File Fragment Reading via .HTR' vulnerability, previous variants of which were discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletins MS00-031 and MS00-044. Like the original variants, this one could enable an attacker to request a file in a way that would cause it to be processed by the HTR ISAPI extension. The result of doing this is that fragments of server-side files, such as ASP files, could potentially be sent to the attacker.

Customers who have previously disabled the HTR functionality would not be affected by this vulnerability. Microsoft recommends that all customers who haven't already disabled HTR do so, unless there is a business-critical reason for keeping it. For the latter group of customers, this patch will eliminate this vulnerability.

Microsoft Windows 95 Patch: Spoofed Route Pointer and Fragmented IGMP Packet Update is a patch equipped with the ability to delete two security vulnerabilities. They are

1. The "Spoofed Route Pointer" vulnerability.
   • This vulnerability could allow a malicious user to obtain network or other information by performing source routing via your Windows 95 computer, even if source routing has been disabled. Installing this update will eliminate this vulnerability and provide additional control over source routing. For more information, please visit Microsoft Security Bulletin MS99-038.
2. The "Fragmented IGMP Packet" vulnerability.
   • This vulnerability exists in TCP/IP stack implementations of Microsoft Windows 95. If fragmented or malformed, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) data packets can cause a variety of problems in Windows 95, ranging from slowing system performance to system failure.
