IzPack 3.9.0
IzPack - Java-based Software Installers Generator more>>
IzPack is an installers generator for the Java platform. It produces lightweight installers that can be run on any operating system where a Java virtual machine is available.
Depending on the operating system, it can be launched by a double-click or a simple java -jar installer .jar from a shell. The most common use is to distribute applications for the Java platform, but you can also use it for other kinds of projects.
The main benefit of IzPack is that it provides a clean and unique way of distributing a project to users using different operating systems.
IzPack is reported to run on: Mac OS X, Windows 2000, XP, Unix-like systems, mostly Linux and FreeBSD variants.
A big care has been put in making IzPack as small as possible in order to reduce the weight of IzPack itself in the final installer archive. Also, IzPack has been designed around modularity and flexibility.
As a consequence, you are able to specify how your installer should be by selecting the panels that you want to show to the final user. Sometimes there are even several panels for the same usage so that you can pick the one that suits the best your needs.
If ever you don?t find your way through the available panels, you can still develop your own ones with the nice and easy IzPack API.
Main features:
- XML-based installer descriptors
- Uses the maximum Jar archives compression level
- Apache Ant integration
- Great flexibility and modularity, it is very easy to extend IzPack
- No native code is required, but you can extend IzPack with native code
- Shortcuts creation system (Win32 and FreeDesktop.org)
- Flexible and powerful user input panel
- Automatic uninstaller creation
- Easy localization with XML langpacks: 16 langpacks are provided by default
- Variable substitution system
- OS-specific scripts interaction
- ... and many more!

Major Features:
- Why PeaZip
- Flexibility
-
- PeaZip can extract most of archive formats both from Windows and Unix worlds: currently 87 file extensions are supported ranging from mainstream 7Z, RAR, TAR and ZIP to experimental ones like PAQ/LPAQ family, currently the most powerful compressor available.
- For archive creation, PeaZip suppors a wide range of compression and encryption standard, from fastes to most powerful ones, and allows to export job definition as scripts to bridge the gap between GUI and console applications, and let the user pick the best of the two worlds.
- Portability
-
- You can use PeaZip on all Windows version and on Linux (PeaZip is a desktop neutral application) with the same features and look and feel; moreover, for both platforms, PeaZip is also available as standalone, portable application not needing installation.
- Security
-
- PeaZip has secure deletion feature, can verify file checksum and hash, and supports multiple strong encryption standards, optionally using two factor authentication (password and keyfile) for increased security:
-
- 7Z's AES256 encryption
- ZIP WinZip's AE encryption based on AES256 (and ZipCrypto for legacy compatibility); can decrypt PKZip's AES encryption
- FreeARC's ARC: AES256, Blowfish, Twofish256 and Serpent256 - this format is also capable to generate recovery records to protect data against corruption
- PEA: AES256 EAX authenticated encryption
- Free as in freedom
-
- PeaZip is freeware, free of charge for any use, and is also free as in freedom since it's Open Source (LGPLv3)
- Main features:
- Full support (read and write)
-
- 7Z, 7Z-sfx, ARC/WRC, BZ2/TBZ2, custom, GZ/TGZ, PAQ/LPAQ, PEA, QUAD/BALZ, split, TAR, UPX, ZIP
- Read only (browse, extract, test)
-
- ACE, ARJ, CAB, CHM, COMPOUND (MSI, DOC, XLS, PPT), CPIO, ISO, Java (JAR, EAR, WAR), Linux (DEB, PET/PUP, RPM, SLP), LHA/LZH, LZMA, Mac (DMG/HFS), NSIS, Open Office files, PAK/PK3/PK4, RAR, SMZIP, U3P, UDF, VHD, WIM, XAR, XPI, XZ, Z/TZ
- Repair
-
- ARC
- Other features: strong encryption, robust file copy, split/join files (file span), secure data deletion, compare, checksum and hash files, system benchmark, generate random passwords and keyfiles.
- Notes for users
- Localizations
- User interface is available in different languages: Tools > Settings > Localization.
-
- PeaZip uses UTF-8 encoded text language files, so it can be translated in any language; language files of previous versions can be used by PeaZip without problems (missing text will appear in english); different revisions (last letter after major and minor version number) uses exactly the same text.
- To contribute new localizations you can mail me translated language files to be included in future revisions or updates: see "Translations" chapter in documentation and don't miss latest peazip-x.y.about_translations.zip package meant to help translators.
- PeaZip installable
-
- PeaZip installable, either for Windows and Linux, needs to run with administrative privileges.
- The program can be installed once from administrative account and then any user running it will have their own private configuration and bookmark files saved on the user's profile home (Linux) or application data (Windows) folder.
- PeaZip's most used functions are reachable from SendTo and context menu (Windows), and from service menus (Linux, KDE) and Nautilus scripts (Linux, Gnome).
- On Windows systems it may be useful to keep the installation package, since it can be used to change program's system integration: file association, context menu and SendTo menu entries. You don't need to uninstall the program if you are re-running the setup of the same version.
- PeaZip portable
-
- You can simply unpack PeaZip portable in the path you prefer and use it, even on the network or on removable devices as USB sticks; it will not modify the host system.
- A writeable path is recommended to allow updating the internal peristent randomness collector.
- PeaZip for Linux
-
- PeaZip is desktop-neutral so it can be used either under Gnome, KDE or other desktop managers. System integration mechanisms relies on FreeDesktop standards and requires a compliant environment, such Gnome and KDE, but basic archiving operations works on any environment.
- Qt packages requires Qt 4.3.4 or more recent, and needs libqt4intf.so installed in /usr/lib or equivalent directory (copy the file and run ldconfig; automatic in installable packages)
- 64 bit versions
-
- While PeaZip's 64 bit packages are meant for 64 bit systems only, PeaZip's 32 bit packages can be used on 64 bit Windows or Linux systems (for Linux, omit architecture check for 32 bit installable packages i.e. with dpkg -i --force-architecture for DEB package, or use _portable packages); 32 bit backend binaries can be freely replaced with 64 bit counterparts (if available) for performance optimization.
- Please note that on Linux 64 bit systems you will need ia32-libs to run 32 bit executables.
- Customisation and scripting
-
- See documentation (and FreeDesktop_integration folder in Linux packages) for hints about integration of PeaZip in the desktop environment (Gnome, KDE, Windows...): file associations, start menu, service/context menus, SendTo, links, scripts and command line...
- Troubleshooting
-
- You can find known issues reported on FAQ page, or on SourceForge project's forum or bug tracker, which can be used also to report new issues or suggestions.
- On Linux systems, if missing libraries are reported installing PeaZip or the first time you run peazip binary (you can launch it from a console for detailed feedback), please follow your package manager instruction to install them. Usually missing libraries are standard and widely available gtk/gtk related components (like libgdk_pixbuf).
Enhancements:
- Includes p7zip backend updated to 9.04 (Linux) and tightened sanitization of input strings in PeaZip GUI as security fix against a class of possible attacks based on code injection.
