Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer that has stricken women worldwide. In fact, it has remained the leading cause of death among women. The numbers so quite startling that various organizations and groups have been clamouring for more research on the possible treatment and prevention of the said disease.
The problem is that the actual causes of breast cancer are unknown, but medical experts have offered possible reasons and factors that can contribute to the proliferation of the said cancer. Diet, history of cancer, hormone levels, and use of oral contraceptives are mentioned as possible factors that can contribute to the onset of breast cancer.
While many women are very much aware that breast cancer is a real threat, not a lot of them undergo regular check-ups to determine if there are any breast abnormalities in the body. It cannot be overemphasized that early detection of breast cancer is extremely important so that proper treatment can be applied, thereby eradicating the spread of the cancer cells in the body.
The warning signs that women should be made aware of are:
- The presence of lumps around the breast area
- Tenderness,
- Changes in breast shape or contour
- Nipple discharge
- Scaliness of the nipple
...among other things. If any of these signs are detected upon self breast examination, then it is imperative to consult a doctor so that proper and more appropriate diagnostic tests can be carried out. While that may sound a little reassuring, the truth is women are afraid to undergo breast examination because there have been talks of how painful and dangerous some diagnostics can be.
Mammography, in particular, is quite notorious in spite of the fact that it occurs low doses of radiation and there is a little pain involved during the procedure. It is normally done when there are suspicious lumps in the breast, but should be done on a regular checkup basis. The Mammogram is by far the most useful in determining the likelihood of cancer in the lumps. A little pain should not deter anyone from undergoing a diagnostic breast procedure, especially since it may be a matter of life and death.
There are situations wherein a breast ultrasound would be recommended prior to a more advanced type of diagnostic test. Breast ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to map the internal structures of the breast. This means that the procedure will be able to detect some forms of breast abnormalities.
The breast ultrasound procedure takes about thirty minutes and it is painless. Doctors would recommend such procedure if there is suspicion of abnormalities around the breast area. The results will also be fast. It is very easy to get to the next stage of detection and treatment.
