Polipo is a fast caching and small web proxy (a web cache, a proxy server, an HTTP proxy).While Polipo was designed to be used by one person or a small group of people, there is nothing that prevents it from being used by a larger group.
What Polipo is useful for
By virtue of being a (mostly) compliant HTTP/1.1 proxy, Polipo has all the uses of traditional web proxies. It is typically used as a web proxy for a single computer or a small network, although theres no fundamental reason why it shouldnt be used by a larger one.
Because Polipo is small and easy to install (just copy the polipo binary), it has applications beyond those of traditional web proxies. I usually copy Polipo to whatever machine I happen to be using and do all my browsing through it (with no on-disk cache). Ive also occasionally used it to cross firewalls that were misconfigured or overly restrictive.
Because it has primitive filtering capabilities, Polipo can be used in place of ad-filtering, privacy-enhancing proxies such as Junkbuster, Privoxy or WWWOFFLE. As Polipo has much more refined HTTP support, it doesnt impose the speed tax usually associated with such proxies.
Since it can speak both IPv4 and IPv6, Polipo can be used as a bridge between the IPv4 and IPv6 Internets: to allow an IPv6-only host to access IPv4 servers or vice versa.
Since it can speak the SOCKS protocol, Polipo can be used together with the tor anonymising network.
Main features:
- Polipo will use HTTP/1.1 pipelining if it believes that the remote server supports it, whether the incoming requests are pipelined or come in simultaneously on multiple connections (this is more than the simple usage of persistent connections, which is done by e.g. Squid);
- Polipo will cache the initial segment of an instance if the download has been interrupted, and, if necessary, complete it later using Range requests;
- Polipo will upgrade client requests to HTTP/1.1 even if they come in as HTTP/1.0, and up- or downgrade server replies to the clients capabilities (this may involve conversion to or from the HTTP/1.1 chunked encoding);
- Polipo has complete support for IPv6 (except for scoped (link-local) addresses).
- Polipo can optionally use a technique known as Poor Mans Multiplexing to reduce latency even further.

You can connect to such a sever with all the well known Usenet-Clients (like some eMail-Clients with additional Usenet functions like MS Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird).

The WendzelNNTPd is a simple IPv6-ready Usenet server with the main goal to be as easy to use as possible. WendzelNNTPd is also portable (Linux/*BSD/*nix/Win32) and comes with a Qt based GUI.

• Now storing the posting body in files what makes SQLite faster and prevents the need for a 2.0.0-mysql release since only using SQLite3 for meta information (header information, newsgroup meta data and the like).
• Instead of 120.000 bytes a posting can now have a much bigger size (16 kbyte header, like before) and a 20 M huge body (one can change this in src/include/wendzelnntpdpath.h)
• Improved some error handling in database.c/server.c - ported code to windows once again

Fasterfox Lite 3.6.1 is an effective utility allowing you to tweak Firefox.

Prefetching was removed for this Lite version because it potentially wasted a lot of server bandwidth as well as causing unnecessary server load.

1. This addon is stable but was sandboxed due to its simplified ability to add possibly excessive configurations.
2. Lite does not mean less performance, it is just a reference to the removal of the obtrusive prefetching ability in Fasterfox. Prefetching was removed for this Lite version because it wastes a lot of server bandwidth and causes unnecessary server load.

In this Lite version options are included for SSL Pipelining, maximum timer-based content reflows, Link Prefetching, IPv6 DNS lookups, and by default the Page Load Timer is disabled.

Fasterfox Lite will speed up your web browsing right out of the box with no assembly required. People who complain that Firefox is slow obviously do not have Fasterfox Lite installed. (Actual speed improvements may vary depending on the desired settings that are used and the presented testing situation.)

Enhancements: To better display the functionality of the SSL Pipelining option, it will now be grayed out if Pipelining is enabled. This is because SSL Pipelining will still work even if the setting for it is disabled while Pipelining is enabled.
