A virtual folder is sometimes called a junction point or (pseudo) symbolic link. It is a folder that is actually a link to another folder.
One use is to move a folder such as My Documents to another volume (drive) with more available space without changing the path of the My Documents folder.
To do this one would move the My Documents folder to another volume, then create a new virtual folder where the My Documents folder originally was that links to the folder on the other volume.
Another use is to make a long (deep) path into a short one.

The Link Shell Extension is a free and useful utility that can implement an extension to the Windows shell explorer, so that HardLinks, Junctions, and SymbolicLinks can be comfortably created via right mouse click on a selection of one or multiple files.
Version restrictions:
- The Link Shell Extension can only be used with the supported plattforms.
- HardLinks can only be made on NTFS volumes, under the supported plattforms.
- HardLinks can only be made within one NTFS volumes, and can not span accross NTFS volumes.
- HardLinks can only be made on *fixed* NTFS volumes.
- HardLinks can only be made on local NTFS volumes.
- Junctions can only be made on NTFS volumes, under W2K/WXP.
- Junctions can only be made within one NTFS volumes, and can not span accross NTFS volumes.
- The Pick Link Source and Drop Hardlink of shell explorer are only visibile, if it is possible to create HardLinks/Junctions/SymbolicLinks. E.g: If you select a file on a FAT drive, press the right mouse button, you will not see the Pick Link Source context menue, because FAT file systems, dont support HardLinks/Junctions/SymbolicLinks. This also happens, if you select source files on a network drive, or select a file as destination, and so on.
