Implementing XML Key Management Services Using ASP.NET 1 is known as a useful sample code that helps you know how to build a Microsoft ASP.NET Web Service conforming to a SOAP message-based interface specification. Specifically, an interface defined by a Web Services Description Language (WSDL) document describing the SOAP messages and XML types used. Sample code for both a client and server conforming to the XML Key Management Specification (see: XML Key Management Specification V1.1, W3C Note 2 Feb 2001) is provided.

Microsoft Key Management Service for Windows Server 2003 is part of Microsoft Windows Volume Activation 2.0. It allows enterprise users to host Key Management Service on Windows Server 2003 to enable activation of Windows Vista using Key Management Service (KMS) Key.
Microsoft Volume Activation 2.0 is a set of technical and policy related solution provided by Microsoft?s Software Protection Platform (SPP) that gives Microsoft customers a more secure and easy to deploy solution to protect and manage their volume license keys. Microsoft Key Management Service for Windows Server 2003 is part of Microsoft Volume Activation 2.0 allows enterprise customers manage the activation of their Windows machines using Key Management Service (KMS) Key.
Enterprise customers who license Windows Vista and Windows Server ?Longhorn? server under volume license program get two keys namely a Multiple Activation Key (MAK) and a Key Management Service (KMS) Key.
Key Management Service based activation will allow enterprise customers to host a local service within their environment to enable activation of machines running Microsoft Windows Vista Business and Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise editions within their environment instead of any activation against Microsoft. Machines that have been activated through KMS will be required to reactivate by connecting to the KMS host at least once every 6 months.
Key Management Service for Windows Server 2003 enables deployment of Windows Vista using current and released server operating system. It uses the Windows Vista KMS key provided through Microsoft?s Volume Licensing System portals (MVLS, eOpen). The KMS host can be activated using either online or offline methods. It uses the same interfaces and tools as KMS on Windows Vista including:
- Software Licensing API, WMI interfaces, error codes, logging events
- SLMGR.VBS and KMS Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager

Microsoft Windows Key Management Service (KMS) is a new Windows service used in volume-licensed environments to activate machines running Windows Vista or later versions.
Microsoft Windows Key Management Service Management Pack will monitor and report the health of KSM hosts within the enterprise environment.
The Microsoft Windows Key Management Service rule group enables system administrators to monitor the health of all computers on which the Key Management Service is enabled. Rules create alerts for conditions that could indicate KMS outages or impending problems.
In addition, KMS activity data logged in the Windows event log are collected to support forensic and statistical reporting for KMS client activations. Coupled with other sources of data, such as System Center Operations Manager, IT pros can gain a complete view of all the volume-licensed computers in their environment.
Main features:
Alerts are generated for the following conditions:
- KMS initialization failures
- DNS SRV publishing failures
- The KMS machine count is below a specified low-water mark
- No KMS activity has occurred for designated periods
Reporting:
- A data collection rule is provided that sends all client requests logged by KMS to the MOM database for subsequent analysis.
- A sample set of SQL reports is provided that can be used as a basis for extensive reporting on client activations.
