Fix for Windows XP SP2 Laptop Battery Drain Bug description
When you unplug the AC power from a Microsoft Windows XP-based portable computer, the battery may drain more quickly than should When you unplug the AC power from a Microsoft Windows XP-based portable computer, the battery may drain more quickly than you expect. Therefore, the operating system may shut down prematurely.

This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

The portable computer cannot enter the deeper Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) processor idle sleep states.

This occurs when the USB 2.0 driver leaves the asynchronous scheduler component running continuously. This prevents the processor from entering the deeper ACPI processor idle sleep states, or C-states. C-states save power when the processor is not busy. These states range from C0 to C3 or C4. Typically, an idle portable computer uses the C3 and C4 states to preserve battery power. If an idle portable computer cannot enter or maintain the C3 or C4 states, the battery power drains more quickly. This problem is fixed by installing the download that is available in this article.

The USB host controller is unable to turn off.

This typically occurs when devices are removed from a nested USB hub that is attached to the host controller. The host controller does not recognize the device removal. Therefore, the controller is never turned off. This prevents the processor from entering the ACPI processor idle sleep states. This problem is not fixed by installing the download that is available in this article.

The USB host controller uses the periodic scheduler for USB 2.0 devices.

This typically will occur when the devices that rely on the periodic scheduler are attached to the host controller. These may be isochronous (Isoch) devices such as audio devices. Alternatively, they may be interrupt devices such as mouse or keyboard. This problem is not fixed by installing the download that is available in this article.

Note Various factors can affect the battery life of different portable computers that use different types of batteries. Therefore, you may not notice any improvement in battery life after you apply this update.

The patch only exists for x86 versions of Windows XP, Service Pack 2.

Battery Monitor is a simple application that records the performance of your battery over a discharge cycle by writing the power and estimated remaining time to a text file every minute. You can then use this list of values to see if it works as it should. (E.g., does it discharge fully or does it break down prematurely?)

Note that this tool does nothing magical. It simply records to a file what you can see when you use a stop watch and look at the battery indicator in the control strip or menu bar.

Since the values of every minute get recorded, you can use the output also to iport into a spreadsheet for making nice graphs. Its up to you to figure out how to do that.

Battery Health Monitor is a useful freeware tool for PowerBook and iBook owners that monitors virtual all battery health parameters and displays them in an easy-to-read format.

Original capacity is an indication of the batterys storage when it was new. Current capacity indicates how much that original capacity has changed with use.

Current charge shows the batterys current charge state while Charge Cycles indicates how many complete charge/discharge cycles the battery has experienced. The percentage value indicates approximately what portion of the number of total recharge cycles the battery supports have been used.

The annunciators at the top of the window indicate the state of the computers power manager circuit and the battery or batteries installed.
