The Downloadable Data Lifeguard Tools was written specifically for Western Digital EIDE hard drives. Its purpose is to examine the drive and test its functionality. It scans the drive and looks for errors. It even has the ability to correct certain types of errors that it may encounter.
Embedded error detection and repair features that automatically detect, isolate and repair problem areas that may develop over the extended use of the hard drive. S.M.A.R.T. monitors hard drive operation to predict errors before data loss occurs. Protective head parking is an exclusive new feature that adds another layer of protection to auto park by safely parking the heads even if other system components lose functionality. Environmental protection filters offer added protection to the inside of the hard drive from humidity, temperature and contamination.
If you encounter problems and suspect the drive is faulty, we request you run our diagnostic utility first before returning it. All too often, drives are returned which are working properly. By using Data Lifeguard, you can confirm the condition of the drive. Using our Data Lifeguard software appropriately can save you valuable time, money, and the trouble of returning a drive.

If your PC already has a HDD installed with an OS of Windows 98SE or greater, you should use the Windows version of Data Lifeguard for best results.
The DOS version is required if installing a hard drive in a new system without existing operating system support. If you plan on copying the contents of a boot drive, Western Digital recommends using the DOS version of Data Lifeguard Tools.
Instructions:
- Extract and run the Dlgsetup11_win.exe file.
- Read and accept the license agreement to continue.
- Once installed, you will be prompted to run the program or may run the program manually from either the programs menu or from the shortcut on your desktop.
- You will see the following options:
-- VIEW INSTALLATION TUTORIAL - Instructions on how to connect your new hard drive to the computer.
-- SETUP YOUR HARD DRIVE - Setup a hard drive already connected to your computer.
-- DRIVE-TO-DRIVE COPY - Copy all the files or a specific folder from one drive to another.
-- HARD DRIVE INFORMATION - Jumper Settings and other technical information about your hard drive.
- Select the task you wish to perform.

Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows 1.17 is specially designed to provide you with the model and serial of WD drives attached to the system. On the main program screen, there are two windows. In the top window, you will see the drives in your system, that are available for testing.
The model number, serial number, and capacity of each drive will be displayed. In the bottom window, the partition information for the selected drive will be displayed. Highlight the drive and select the icon on the top row to test or run SMART status. The DLGDIAG - Select an Option window appears.
You will see the following options QUICK TEST, EXTENDED TEST, WRITE ZEROS, and VIEW TEST RESULT. Select the test you wish to perform and click the Start button. When the test completes, you will be notified with a pass/fail message. Click the Close button.
