Tao Linux (pronounced dow Linux) is a project to build a free Linux distribution from the sources used in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux product line.

The target market is either experienced system administrators who would like freely available binaries of this code, or end users who are interested in experimenting with enterprise functionality.

Besides being mostly compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, it also includes software packages such as Eclipse and clustering tools not found in the base RHEL products.

Here are some key features of "Tao Linux":

· Includes gcj-compiled Eclipse IDE
· Includes clustering tools
· Yum with protectbase patch for safer use of 3rd-party repos
· Supports ACLs in ext3, nfs and Samba
· Many packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux also run on Tao Linux

Linux is an increasingly popular open source Unix-like operating system. These pages arent intended as a general guide (for that, check out our list of resources) but rather information specific to using Linux here at Boston University, and particularly to using our custom distribution, BU Linux.

BU Linux is based on Fedora Core Linux, but specifically tailored for the BU environment. Weve added security updates, made modifications to make software work better with the way things are set up here, and added some applications that we think you might like to have. For details, see the FAQ.

Mactel-Linux project is the effort to adapt the GNU/Linux operating system to Intel-based Apple Macintosh hardware.

Nethence Linux is a Slackware, but with less packages, hence the lighter ISO image. During installation, just select A, AP, D, K, L, N and eventually X sets, then Full install.

The packages matching the latest patches/packages/, ../unsupported/ and pasture/ folders as of Nethence Linux release date are included.

Frankie Linux is a bootable CD containing the Linux desktop operating system for PC. Frankie Linux runs Linux directly from the CD without installing.

All your available partitions and data storage devices (CD-ROM, USB storage devices, etc.) should be recognized at boot and should be mounted to /mnt/**.

Lots of useful applications are included.And you can also copy the CD to a FAT32 partition, and run it on your hard disk by launching a ms-dos program called loadlin.

A Live-CD is a completely operational Linux system contained on one bootable CD that can de run from any CD-ROM drive, without requering the installation of anything on your hard drive. When you want to return to your previous operating system, reboot and simply remove the CD from your drive. If you want to run Frankie Linux on your harddisk, just copy to a FAT32 Partition.

Frankie Linux is a distro base on Slackware , and it contains almost all usefull software for running full-fledged desktop, including Xwindow graphics user interface and lots of useful applications.

Frankie Linux can also be installed (manually) to a ext2/ext3/Reiserfs partition like other distributions, but you have to configure boot loader manually.

Many modern Linux users experience great inconveniencies because different operating systems have different standards on data storage. Family of secure operating systems from Microsoft Windows NT, 2000 and XP use their own file system, NTFS. Unfortunately Microsoft still has not opened technical information about NTFS to publicity. That is why open society of Linux developers still does not have solid support for this file system.

Our company has applied all our knowledge of file systems and operating systems to produce a product called NTFS for Linux . This product gives transparent access to any NTFS drive into Linux operating system through regular mount function. So you and any application can browse these drives, read and change files, copy and create new files and folders. Everything absolutely transparently just like with native ext2fs, ext3fs or reiserfs file system.

Additionally, you not only can install NTFS access driver into Linux operating system, but you can also use bootable CD included in the product to access NTFS volumes. Linux::DVB is a Perl interface to (some parts of) the Linux DVB API.

This module provides an interface to the Linux DVB API. It is a straightforward translation of the C API. You should read the Linux DVB API description to make any sense of this module. It can be found here:

All constants from frontend.h and demux.h are exported by their C name and by default.

Noteworthy differences to the C API: unions and sub-structs are usually translated into flat perl hashes, i.e struct.u.qam.symbol_rate becomes $struct->{symbol_rate}.

Noteworthy limitations of this module include: no way to set the frequency or diseqc. No interface to the video, audio and net devices. If you need this functionality bug the author.

Linux::CDROM cookbook contains common recipes featuring your CDROM drive as its main ingredient.

Theres a gazillion ways of reading the disc inside your CDROM drive. The most high-level ones would be mounting your CD and using it as a normal directory or - in case of an Audio-CD - using a player to play tracks. This is boring stuff and you dont need Linux::CDROM for any of that.

But when you want to write your own CD-player or -grabber, this is more like it. You can even get at a lower level than that.

PLAYING AUDIO

Linux::CDROM offers a couple of methods dealing with that. For starting playback, you will use either Linux::CDROM::play_ti (ti == track index) or Linux::CDROM::play_msf (msf == minute, second and frame).

All playing operations happen non-blockingly. That means, you start playback and your program does not wait till the playback is done. Instead if will proceed with the next line.
