Core Data Access components such as the Microsoft SQL Server OLE DB provider. Microsoft Data AccessBuffer Overrun in MDAC Function Could Allow Code E 1.0
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) is a collection of components that provides the underlying functionality for a number of database operations, such as connecting to remote databases and more>> Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) is a collection of components that provides the underlying functionality for a number of database operations, such as connecting to remote databases and returning data to a client. When a client system on a network tries to see a list of computers that are running SQL Server and that reside on the network, it sends a broadcast request to all the devices that are on the network. Because of a vulnerability in a specific MDAC component, an attacker could respond to this request with a specially-crafted packet that could cause a buffer overflow.
An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same level of privileges over the system as the program that initiated the broadcast request. The actions an attacker could carry out would be dependent on the permissions under which the program using MDAC ran. If the program ran with limited privileges, an attacker would be limited accordingly; however, if the program ran under the local system context, the attacker would have the same level of permissions.
Since the original version of MDAC on your system may have changed from updates available on the Microsoft Web site, we recommend using the following tool to determine the version of MDAC you have on your system: Microsoft Knowledge Base article 301202 "HOW TO: Check for MDAC Version" discusses this tool and explains how to use it. Also, Microsoft Knowledge Base article 231943 discusses the release history of the different versions of MDAC.
Mitigating factors:
- For an attack to be successful an attacker would have to simulate a SQL server that is on the same IP subnet as the target system.
- When a client system on a network tries to see a list of computers that are running SQL Server and that reside on the network, it sends a broadcast request to all the devices that are on the network. A target system must initiate such a broadcast request to be vulnerable to an attack. An attacker would have no way of launching this first step but would have to wait for anyone to enumerate computers that are running SQL Server on the same subnet. Also, a system is not vulnerable by having these SQL management tools installed.
- Code executed on the client system would only run under the privileges of the client program that made the broadcast request.

How does Daisy work?
Ancient Chinese secret. Actually, this is what it does:
1. Verify command line switches
2. Verify security access requirements
3. Verify OS version and service pack
4. Download daisy.ini from FTP site
5. Check version in .ini to running apps version
6. Run qfecheck for pre-hotfix check
7. Update registry so Daisy can post event log messages
8. Download .xml or .zip mssecure database from local FTP or xml.shavlik.com via HTTP
9. Run hfnetchk locally with downloaded xml database
10. Extract hotfix info from results
11. Report to user and ask if they want to download and install hotfixes
12. For each hotfix, try to download the file and its .cls pairing from the local FTP site
13. Checksum the hotfix file to make sure it downloaded correctly
14. Install each hotfix with its custom command line switches
15. Report outcome to the user
16. Write events to the event log
17. Run qfecheck for post-hotfix check
18. Run qchain to organize hotfix installs
19. Quit or reboot depending on command line switches
Enhancements:
- Added additional logic to skip ill-formed hotfixes (ignoreQs.txt)
- Fixed cases where silent execution would still popup an interactive window and hang
DbaMgr 0.65
DbaMgr is an alternative administrative Console for Microsft MSDE 1.0 more>>
Written in vb6 sp5, fully based on SQL-DMO, the com object that implements
the development and maintenance of the engine and dependent/created objects.
Needs win common controls, RichEdit, MSFlexGrid, Ms DataGrid and Mdac.
It will not be an alternative to Enterprise Manager, its simple and
primitive, but can be usefull for simple installation of MSDE for the common
housekeeping tasks..., i guess not so simple installation would require
a DBA and use of Enterprise Manager anyway.
Table housekeeping permits the possibility of inserting a new column between
previously created.
Default management is similar to the one of Enterprise Manager, as it
permit erratic insert of non compliant value (alfa val for numerique
fields...). I found a bug in dmo object that, while fetching info of the
underlying field, sometime reports erratic info about Precision, Scale
(especially for xCHAR type) and Identity
DbaMgr requires Ado2.5 (MDAC2.5) and portion of SQL Server 7.0 Client Components containing SQL-DMO;
MDB View 1.0
MDB View - Free MDB Viewer for PC without Microsoft Access installed more>>
All you need are the MDAC 2.1 components or higher ( that you can get for free on Microsoft download page ).
MDB View will show you all tables included in the database, with all fields and records.
You can see a detailed information for each record, and you can search for an element in the whole database.
Then you can export all database tables, fields and records, both to external CSV (Comma Separated Values) and HTML files (with an editable CSS file).
You can also open protected database if you know the password and you can view a database directly from the command line, making also possible the view of a database directly with the cds autorun.
Version restrictions:
- MDB View is freeware with a nag-screen that you can remove with a donation to the author.
DbaMgr2K 0.21
DbaMgr2k provides a graphic management interface for MS MSDE 1.0 and MSDE 2000 installations more>>
Provided with built-in English and Italian language localization, support user defined language translation.
DbaMgr2K project was entirely written in VB6 sp5, fully based on SQL Server 2000 SQL-DMO, the com object that implements the programming and maintenance of the engine and dependent/created objects.
It was still written in VB6 instead of .Net languages, becouse of lack of a
native .Net Sql_DMO component or similar to it, developing time would have
exceded to much and .Net frameworks Interop call to Sql-DMO would have been a very big overhead.
Needs Windows common controls, RichEdit, Ms DataGrid, MSFlexGrid and Mdac 2.6. The project has been vouluntary split from DbaMgr, becouse DbaMgr2k implements some version "2" of Sql-DMO interfaces available only on Sql
Server 2000, and it would be not possible to be re-compiled from people
with only SQL Server 7.0 available.
Resume Rater 1.0
Resume Rater will help you rate resumes by sorting them into categories. more>>
Resume Rater literally mimics human brain, as it "Reads" each resume, spots the presence ( or absence ) of the selected function / skill related keywords ( and their context ), and assigns predetermined "Weightages" (in human brains parlance - the "importance") to each keyword to compute an overall SCORE for each resume.
Main features:
- Resume Rater "rates" resumes for their suitability / relevance against a given functional background or a given skill background that you are looking for in any resume.
- Resume Rater sorts the text resumes into categories
- When you click on any particular "Category" in the table, only the relevant resumes will get displayed
- It saves your time ( - the scarcest resource ).
- It automates ( albeit, thru collective intelligence of thousands of users), the "Rating" process.
- It vastly improves the quality of rating (being unbiased / untiring / thorough ).
- It enormously speeds-up the shortlisting process ( whom to call for interview ? )
- You are no more glued to your mailbox !
- It enables you to spend more time interviewing / evaluating candidates (something which no software can do ). Resume Rater highlights (in RED) the keywords found in a resume. When you click on any of these keywords, a set of relevent INTERVIEW QUESTIONS pop-up! Then you can link CONSULT WIKIPEDIA to find answers ! This feature works when you are online.
- Suddenly those thousands of unsearchable text resumes lying in hundreds of files and folders on your harddisk, get

Searchable ( a matter of seconds )
