The best media player (movie & music)

"I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Wash. to experience Windows Media Player 11 for Windows Vista.

While there, I got a hands-on, close-up look at the coolest new Media Player features. I spent time exploring the streamlined interface; I downloaded music from the upcoming MTV Networks music service URGE; and I spent hours customizing views, album art size, and song lists. Media Player 11 had everything I had hoped the new version would and more, as well as just about everything Id read from the wish lists of community newsgroup posters in the past. It didnt take long to figure out that this was a total makeover of the last version.

Some of the unique features of Media Player 11 are a deeply integrated music library for both online and offline content, a new and improved interface, the ability to connect to additional hardware easily, and integrated, easy-to-use tools for following the process of any task (downloading music, burning CDs, synching music, or streaming video, just to name a few). Media Player 11 has a new integrated feel, too-one that makes online, network, and offline content indistinguishable.

Many of the improvements are due to the redesigned interface, which includes helpful shortcuts on the menus and menu bars, simplified trees and an improved and advanced media library. There are now Back and Forward buttons, giving Media Player a web-browser feel; a lightning-fast WordWheel search tool for getting through the library; and Xbox 360 support. And Im just getting started! In this article, Ill introduce the features I found most exciting, and features youre going to love when you get your hands on Media Player 11.

Reliability, ease of use, and hardware support
Windows Media Player 11 is by far the most reliable, easy to use, and complete music experience available. In my time with it, I found it to be extremely dependable. Its fast too, and it reminded me of expensive Internet jukeboxes normally found only in nightclubs and bars. As with those high-end players, the line between whats actually on the jukebox and what comes from the Internet is nearly indistinguishable. Media Player 11, in my opinion, is the best jukebox Ive ever experienced.

Enhanced, user-friendly interface
The Media Player 11 interface makes finding the media you want easier than ever. The complicated (and sometimes convoluted) trees that once appeared in the Media Player Library are gone. Now when you select a category from the Library, the content in that category appears off to the right instead of under the category on the left. Finally, no more long album and artist listings that scroll into infinity!

With the trees gone, Media Player 11 is easier to navigate than any of its predecessors. There arent any lines between the trees, album information, or CD cover art, and the default album art view now shows album art and track information in the center of the screen. All of this makes finding the information you want a lot easier.

Along with enhanced views, the buttons at the top of the interface contain new shortcuts. Some of my favorites include adjusting format and bitrate on the fly for CD ripping, and switching back and forth from audio to data settings for CD burning. With these new shortcuts, youll spend more time viewing and listening to your media, and less time managing it.

Finally, I love the new playback controls at the bottom of the screen. Theyre large and easy to use, and intuitive enough for anyone to easily operate. No more fumbling around trying to click those small controls from the old Media Player, and no more awkward scrambling for the mute button when your boss enters the room. "

One of the streaming media formats supported by Windows Media Player is Advanced Streaming Format (ASF). A security vulnerability occurs in Windows Media Player 6.4 because the code that processes ASF files contains an unchecked buffer.

By creating a specially malformed ASF file and inducing a user to play it, an attacker could overrun the buffer, with either of two results: in the simplest case, Windows Media Player 6.4 would fail; in the more complex case, code chosen by the attacker could be made to run on the user?s computer, with the privileges of the user. The scope of this vulnerability is rather limited. It affects only Windows Media Player 6.4, and can only be exploited by the user opening and deliberately playing an ASF file. There is no capability to exploit this vulnerability via email or a web page.

However, the patch eliminates additional vulnerabilities. Specifically, it eliminates all known vulnerabilities affecting Windows Media Player 6.4 ? discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletins MS00-090, MS01-029, and MS01-042 ? as well as some additional variants of these vulnerabilities that were discovered internally by Microsoft. Some of these vulnerabilities could be exploited via email or a web page. In addition, some affect components of Windows Media Player 6.4 that, for purposes of backward compatibility, ship with Windows Media Player 7, and 7.1. We therefore recommend that customers running any of these versions of Windows Media Player apply the patch to ensure that they are fully protected against all known vulnerabilities.

Windows Media Player for Windows XP includes components of Windows Media Player 6.4, but they are not affected by the ASF buffer overrun or by any of the other vulnerabilities discussed in the security bulletins listed above. However, the version 6.4 components that ship with Windows Media Player for Windows XP are affected by some of the newly discovered variants of these vulnerabilities. Rather than installing this patch, however, we recommend that customers install the 25 October 2001 Critical Update for Windows XP.

The ASX Buffer Overrun vulnerability: Windows Media Player supports the use of Active Stream Redirector (.ASX) files to enable users to play streaming media that resides on intranet or Internet sites. However, the code that parses .ASX files has an unchecked buffer, and this could potentially enable a malicious user to run code of his choice on the machine of another user. The malicious user could either send an affected file to another user and entice her to run or preview it, or he could host such a file on a web site and cause it to launch automatically whenever a user visited the site. The code could take any action on the machine that the legitimate user herself could take. The WMS Script Execution vulnerability: Windows Media Player 7 introduced a feature called skins, that allows customization of the look and feel of Windows Media Player. However, a custom skin (.WMS) file could potentially include script, which would execute if Windows Media Player was run and that skin was selected. A malicious user could either send a customized skin containing script to another user and try to entice her into using it, or he could host such a file on a web site and cause it to launch automatically whenever a user visited the site. Because the code would reside on the user?s local machine, it would be able to execute ActiveX controls, including ones not marked safe for scripting. This would enable the code to take any action that can be accomplished via an ActiveX control. This update can only be installed on Windows Media Player 7, Build 1956. You can check the build number of your Windows Media Player by selecting Help | About Windows Media Player. If the number displayed is less than 7.00.00.1956, please download and install the latest version of Windows Media Player from the Microsoft website (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download) prior to installing this update. This patch is for the Windows 98/ME/2000 operating system only. Since Windows Media Player version 7 does not run on Windows 95 and NT, Windows 95 and NT users should download and apply the patch for Windows Media Player version 6.4 if applicable.

Windows Media Player is the multimedia software application developed by Microsoft that provides users with the ability to view multimedia content, both from their hard drive and from the Internet.

Windows Media Player 10 gives you more music and more choices, and for the first time makes it possible to sync high-quality music, video, and photos to the latest portable devices.

Overall, Windows Media Player 10 is a huge improvement over previous Windows Media Player versions, though it still falls short of the competition in a few key areas.

If youve bought into the Microsoft-oriented music world in any way, however--perhaps with a Media Center PC, Portable Media Center device, or by using a WMA-compatible online music service--you simply must upgrade to WMP 10.

This release offers major improvements for discovering and buying, and subscribing to content online, sports an improved UI, and integrates nicely with a coming generation of portable devices.

And if up-and-coming music subscription services, like that now offered by Napster, take off, the release of WMP 10 will be heralded as the watershed moment of what is clearly still a nascent market.

That said, users interested solely in music playback will likely find little reason to abandon iTunes. And iPod users will simply ignore WMP 10 as they have previous versions.

Windows Media Player 10 is free and requires Windows XP (any edition), but not any other Windows versions.

That decision will be controversial, but I think its the right one: With over 300 million users, XP is clearly the preferred Windows client for consumers and music enthusiasts: Had Microsoft shipped a WMP 10 version for older Windows versions, that product would have lacked key features and held up the release of the XP version.

Launch the Windows Media Player with the file that you pass it as a parameter

The Windows Media Player Launcher application was designed to be a small tool to launch the Windows Media Player with the file that you pass it as a parameter.

This is useful if you want to do an autoplay CD-ROM with any media file (AVI, WAV, ...) that the Media Player can play.

Using this program has two advantages over running the Media Player directly:
The program will search for the location of Media Player. This allows you to to use an autoplay CD-ROM in other computer although the Media Player be installed in a different location.

This application launch the Media Player in fullscreen mode, and when the play of the media file is over, the Media Player is closed.

The Windows Media 9 Series Codec Install Package is used to install the latest Windows Media codecs. This package can be used as an alternative to automatically downloading Windows Media Codecs, or to correct problems experienced with previously-downloaded codecs.

This component can be installed on the following operating systems:

Windows XP Professional/Home/Media Center Edition
Windows 2000 with Media Player 7.0 or later
Windows Millenium Edition
Windows 98 Second Edition with Media Player 7.0 or later
If a connection to a server running the Windows Media Unicast Service was started, then severed, in a particular way, the service would leak some of the resources that were allocated during the connection. If this sequence of commands was repeated enough times, it could degrade the server s performance to the point where it would no longer be able to provide useful service. When a connection to a Windows Media server is made, then severed, using a particular sequence of TCP/IP packets, the Windows Media Unicast Service does not release all of the resources allocated to the connection. By repeatedly making and then severing connections in this manner, a malicious user could exhaust the resources on a server, thereby preventing it from providing streaming media services. If an affected server were attacked via this vulnerability, the server operator could restore normal operation by restarting the Windows Media Service. Any sessions that were in progress would be lost, but users could immediately reconnect and resume normal use. Note: Windows Media Services 4.1 ships as part of Windows 2000, and the patch for Windows Media Services 4.1 can be applied atop Windows 2000 Gold or SP1. Windows Media Services 4.0 does not ship as part of any other product. The patch for Windows Media Services 4.0 can be applied to any machine already running the product.

Some tools (like nLite and XPlite) allow you to remove Windows Media Player from your system or even prevent it from ever being installed. The downside to this is that vital components for Windows Media playback are also removed. As a result you wont be able to play Windows Media files in your browser or in your favorite player. A solution for this problem is Windows Media Lite, which restores those vital components.

Windows Media Lite was specially created for those people who have removed WMP 7/9/10 from Windows XP/2003 using tools like nLite or XPlite, but do want to be able to play and stream Windows Media content. This package is also useful for Windows 2000 users who only have Windows Media Player 6.4 installed.

After installing this package you should be able to play Windows Media content in your browser and also in most players (for example Media Player Classic). Even those websites that normally require WMP9 or higher to be installed.

Includes:
Windows Media Codecs (DirectShow/VCM/DMO)
Windows Media Core Components
Windows Media Player 10 Core Components and IE plugin
Windows Media Browser plugin for Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape and Opera
Audio Codecs

Do NOT use this package if you have Windows Media Player 7/9/10 installed!
