The Desktop Earth application was designed to be a wallpaper generator. It will generate a high-resolution, accurate representation of the Earth. The imagery is based on NASAs Blue Marble Next and Earths City Lights.
Day and night is accurately represented depending on the Suns overhead position (which depends on both the time of day and the day of the year) and both the snow cover and the foliage changes with the seasons.

Image Browser was designed to allow "browsing" though a huge image (defined here as "several time your screen resolution") without the huge amount of RAM this usualy requires.
It works by first dividing the picture in a lot of smaller files and by precalculating different zoom levels; this first step, the "preparation", is handled by a seperate program (included in the download).
It can take a long time on slow computers, but it only needs to be done once per image. Once this is done, a second program, the ImageBrowser, will allow you to "browse" though the resulting smaller pictures as if they were still one huge picture.
Although it will work with any picture, this program was made with the NASAs Blue Marble pictures of the Earth in mind. You can download prepared version of four of them here, all at 8000*4000 pixels.
Enhancements:
- New help system based on Doug Holtons HTMLfield ; output in the PC version is limited to plain text, though the links still works
- Fixed bug where "loading" mention would not be visible on PC
- PC version now provided in zip format (although the Blue Marble pictures are still compressed SIT files)

The Spitzer Space Telescope (formerly SIRTF, the Space Infrared Telescope Facility) was launched into space by a Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida on 25 August 2003. During its 2.5-year mission, Spitzer will obtain images and spectra by detecting the infrared energy, or heat, radiated by objects in space between wavelengths of 3 and 180 microns (1 micron is one-millionth of a meter).
The website this Widget grabs imagery from is maintained by the Spitzer Science Center, located on the campus of the California Institute of Technology and part of NASAs Infrared Processing and Analysis Center.

World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. more>> 3D Engine
World Wind allows any user to zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth, leveraging high resolution LandSat imagery and SRTM elevation data to experience Earth in visually rich 3D, just as if they were really there.
Particular focus was put into the ease of usability so people of all ages can enjoy World Wind. All one needs to control World Wind is a two button mouse. Additional guides and features can be accessed though a simplified menu. Navigation is automated with single clicks of a mouse as well as the ability to type in any location and automatically zoom into it.
World Wind was designed to run on recent PC hardware with 3D acceleration. Please refer to the download section for more information on system requirements.
Blue Marble
World Wind has a full copy of the Blue Marble, a spectacular true-color image of the entire Earth as seen on NASAs Earth Observatory: the Blue Marble.
Put together from data of a variety of satellites such as MODIS and Terra, the Blue Marble can be seen in all its glory at 1 km per pixel resolution.
Land Sat 7
Using World Wind, you can continue to zoom past Blue Marble and reveal the extremely detailed seamless mosaic of LandSat 7 data.
LandSat 7 is a collection of images from 1999-2003 at an impressive 15 m per pixel resolution. It includes other color bands such as the infrared spectrum. Users will be able browse these different sets as they become available. Any changes and updates are automatically inherited by World Wind.
LandSat 7 resolution makes it possible to see your own city, neighborhood, or landmarks in your vicinity. Seeing the whole globe like this puts the world in context with scientifically accurate data.
The complete LandSat 7 data set is too large to fit on a single machine so World Wind only downloads what you see and stores a compressed copy on your computer for later viewing.<<less
