NMS is a useful yet faceless tool that forces system sleep at a set idle time or on Screen Saver activation. Can follow Energy Saver settings.

For me this solves the recurring problem of an invariably corrupt power manager preventing automatic sleep and the frequent dead batteries that result.

Simple as this solution is it has worked great for me. My laptop ALWAYS sleeps.

pyNMS is a set of Python modules for network management, network testing, systems management, and general use. It contains a nearly complete implementation of SNMPv2c, a SMI/MIB package, and a MIB "compiler".

The package as a whole is currently in development, and much of the top-level
NMS functionality (namely, a GUI interface). But, many low-level modules are still very useful for custom management scripts that you can made.

Some of these modules have external dependecies. These are:
