In the past, the Apple iPods battery gauge, which is displayed at the top right of the screen, has been known to be inaccurate in showing the amount of charge remaining. Despite several firmware updates attempted by Apple to fix the problem, many iPods still do not have an accurate method of measuring battery life remaining.
A while back it was discovered that Apple included a neat tweak beginning with the 3rd generation "Touch Button" iPods. The tip involved modifying the contents of an iPods system directory, and would force the iPod to show a numeric value for the charge remaining. However, since this was a Mac based tweak, up until now, no one has created a similar easy-to-use tool to apply the tweak to iPods synced via PCs and Windows.
I programmed this self-contained tool to share an super convenient method of toggling between displaying a graphical and a numeric battery icon on your iPod. Simply attach your iPod to your computer, run this tool, specify the drive letter which corresponds to your iPod when prompted, and choosing between the two modes is as easy as pushing a button!
When using the numeric representation, a value between 0 and 500 is typically shown on the top right hand corner of the screen when the iPod runs off its battery (the iPod will continue to show a battery icon when it is docked in any way). Typically a full charge on a good battery will yield a value between 425 and 512. As you can see, you can gauge how much life your battery has remaining before it has to be replaced by using this method.
Note: Due to the limitation of earlier iPod firmware revisions, this tweak does not work with 1st-generation "Scroll-wheel" or 2nd-generation "Touch-wheel" iPods (these earlier generations only support displaying the traditional battery icon). Since there is no way for the tool to differentiate between iPod generations, please check your iPod before running the utility. Dont worry though; running this program on an iPod which does not support displaying a numeric charge value will not harm the iPod.
