FontRename is a Java 1.4 application to rename OpenType and TrueType font files with their internal English "font full name" using only plain text characters (ASCII) plus an extension for the type (*.OTF, *.TTC, *.TTF). This gives consistent names to font files, no matter what their source.
FontRename does not change the contents of the file, only the names in the system file directory.
FontRename is an early version of what eventually became the 400-pound gorilla called RenameUniFont, which has options to choose the preferred language, and includes a table to convert many non-Latin characters to phonetic equivalents.

FontRedate is a Java 1.4 application to read internal dates from OpenType, PostScript, or TrueType font files, and to change the file modification dates to match. With FontRedate the file contents remain unchanged as the only changes occur to the date in the system file directory.
Internal font dates may or may not be accurate; many fonts are created and later edited without setting the date properly.
Times may differ from what you expect depending upon your time zone, and will usually agree with what the Microsoft Font Properties Extension shows in its Version tab for OTF/TTC/TTF files, plus or minus daylight saving time.

FontChecksum is a Java 1.4 application to verify the internal checksums in OpenType and TrueType font files.
Sometimes when you download a file, or copy a file from a worn CD/DVD, what you receive differs from the original. After downloading or copying twice, you may have two files with the same size, the same date, and the same apparent contents.
When compared byte-by-byte with commands such as "comp" on DOS/Windows or "cmp" on UNIX, only a few bits or bytes are different. The rest of the files are the same.
Your question is which file is correct. One of them must be wrong. (Both could be wrong!) Since font files contain internal checksums, you can use this information to test which of the files is more correct.
The freeware and shareware fonts that are produced with older font tools have numerous checksum errors.

Internal font dates may or may not be accurate; many fonts are created and later edited without setting the date properly. Times may differ from what you expect depending upon your time zone, and will usually agree with what the Microsoft Font Properties Extension shows in its Version tab for OTF/TTC/TTF files, plus or minus daylight saving time. Dates can not and will not be changed for read-only files, which is a restriction imposed by the Java run-time, not the operating system.
OpenType fonts (*.OTF), TrueType fonts (*.TTF), and TrueType collections (*.TTC) actually have very similar internal formats and are processed together. All three of these use a single file for each font. PostScript fonts can have multiple files (*.AFM, *.INF, *.PFB, *.PFM, etc). For PostScript, an attempt is made to extract the internal date from *.PFA or *.PFB files, and if that works, then the file directory dates are changed for all files with the same root name and one of the alternate file types. This naming convention does not apply to font files on an Apple Macintosh, so use caution with Mac fonts!<<less
