Reversi (Othello) is a game for two players, using pieces coloured black on one side and white on the other. The idea is to turn your opponents pieces to your own colour, thereby either removing your opponent completely, or getting to the end of the game with the most pieces left. Reversi was invented in England in the 19th Century, and rediscovered more recently by the Japanese Goro Hasegawa. His father was a scholar, and remarked on the similarity between the swift reversal of fortunes in the game and the Shakespeare play Othello.

Othello is a free widget that lets you to play the game of Othello against the computer.
Options are provided for difficulty level, piece flipping animation, and board size. There is full Undo and Hint capability.
To play, place pieces on empty spaces on the board so that your (black) pieces surround the opponents white pieces on a line - horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
The opponents pieces that are surrounded are then flipped over to match the colour of the new piece.
Each play must either surround one or more of the opponents pieces, or the player must pass without placing a new piece on the board.
The game is over when the board is full or neither player can place a new piece. The player with the greatest number of pieces on the board wins.

A reversi online game. After you and an opponent have joined a game of reversi you may go to it any time by clicking your opponents name as it appears on your game status page. If it is your turn, when you see the game board a blue outline is shown around the pieces that were changed in your opponents last move.
To make your move, click a space where you want to place a piece. You must place a piece where it will capture one or more of your opponents pieces. A new page will load showing your new piece on the board and the captured pieces turned to your color. Then, you must click one of the Submit buttons at the bottom of the page to submit your move. If you dont want to submit it and you want to make a different move, click Take back the move.
