EDGE Diagrammer is an ideal diagramming tool. EDGE lets you define "styles" using hundreds of predefined drag-and-drop shapes and arrowheads. Save your styles in diagram templates to establish your own diagramming methods. EDGE Diagrammer comes with complete flowcharting templates, network diagramming templates, block diagrams, org charts, and more to get you started. EDGE Diagrammer can create flowcharts and similar diagrams with minimal effort. As you draw your diagram, EDGE Diagrammer connects lines to figures and attaches labels to lines. It remembers these relationships and adjusts automatically when you move objects around. It can also adjust the size of a shape when you add text to it.

EDGE Diagrammer stands out from the crowd because it can be used effectively in the first few minutes with no prior knowledge or training. It lets you create diagrams the way you think is most natural. Most tasks can be accomplished in multiple ways so that the way you prefer is usually available and does what you expect. This attention to your convenience and productivity is reflected throughout the product.

The diagram model is very simple. Add the diagram elements you want, connect them with lines or arrows, add descriptive text. The program does the rest by keeping lines attached properly, and managing associations between shapes, lines, and text.

The program's workspace is especially designed for your ease, comfort, productivity, and enjoyment. Simple but powerful toolbars and menus keep the most frequent tasks handy. Objects most common to a specific type of diagram are available with one click from the style bar on the left of the screen. And the screen itself shows you just what you need, exactly as it will print.

Edit text directly on the screen with the text tool. What you see is what you get. No need to open cumbersome dialog boxes or guess how the result will look.

To simplify selection of sizes, use our drop menus of pre-defined standard sizes. To select a border width for a figure, you can choose "fine" or "heavy" rather than figuring out the exact point size that will look attractive both on the screen and when printed. Of course you can select any size directly if you prefer.

Major Features:

  1. Includes hundreds of pre-defined shapes and symbols organized in the Figure Symbol Gallery.
  2. Includes several pre-defined diagram templates such as flowcharts, block diagrams, org charts, computer diagrams, network diagrams, and general purpose diagrams.

Pacestar UML Diagrammer 6.10.2030 offers a powerful tool which can allow you to create UML 2.0 diagrams quickly and easily. Develop, document, and communicate your designs in a systematic yet flexible commonly understood notation. Supports activity, class and object, use case, sequence, state, package, and component deployment diagrams, and more. This specialized drawing and design tool helps you exploit the best aspect of UML, the standardized visual design process without imposing a cumbersome project methodology.

And it simplifies this process so that you can be productive immediately with little or no training. Hyperlinked tips provide instant help. Professional visual design features include full pan and zoom, graphics import, web page export, poster printing, hyperlinks, curves, custom arrowheads, and the ability to add your diagrams to most other documents. Powerful grid and alignment aids keep your diagram attractive. Highly customizable.

Major Features:

  1. UML DIAGRAMMING GUIDE
Pacestar UML Diagrammer includes the UML Diagramming Guide (pdf), a supplemental user guide and associated on-line help that provides tips, advice, and how-to information for working with the different types of UML diagrams and diagramming constructs. The UML Diagramming Guide explains which shapes and styles to use to represent which UML symbols and paths, how to attach a port to a component, how to adjust interface symbols, what's the best way to label pins, and so on.
This user guide is available in electronic form only. Printed manuals have been discontinued for some time due to lack of demand. The manual is provided as a PDF file which can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader Software, freely downloadable from Adobe's web site. The user guide is detailed and comprehensive, fully illustrated where required for clarity.
  2. UML CONSTRUCTS NOT DIRECTLY SUPPORTED -
The following UML constructs and elements are not directly supported by this software in its present revision. Most are less frequently used parts of UML 2.0, and all can be constructed by using raw symbols and generic line styles when needed. However, there is no direct support or 'awareness' of these items to facilitate the convenience that would otherwise be expected.
    Timing Diagrams
    Parameter Sets
    Explicit Directions (Arrows) within Pins
    General Ordering Paths
    Certain Redundant Stereotype Symbols
    Information Class Stereotypes
    Customized Stereotype Symbols
  3. QUALIFIERS
Qualifiers snap onto classes. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the class symbol moves or is copied. If the class symbol is deleted, the qualifier is deleted as well. Simply select a qualifier from the style bar, drag it near a class, and let it snap into place.
  4. ASSOCIATION NAMES WITH DIRECTION
Associations can be named by simply adding a lateral path label to the association.
Direction arrows can then be added by right clicking on the name label. The label and direction indicator will remain in place when the association is moved around.
  5. PINS
Pins snap onto activity symbols. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the activity symbol moves or is copied. If the activity symbol is deleted, the pin is deleted as well. Simply select a pin (or a listbox pin) from the style bar, drag it near an activity symbol (or an expansion region), and let it snap into place.
  6. STATE NAME TABS
Name tabs snap onto states. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the state moves or is copied. Simply select a name tab from the style bar, drag it near a state, and let it snap into place.
  7. STATE ENTRY/EXIT POINTS
Entry and exit points onto states. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the state moves or is copied. Simply select an entry or exit point from the style bar, drag it near a state, and let it snap into place.
  8. SELF-TRANSITIONS
Self transitions within a state diagram loop back to the originating state symbol state. You can create self-transitions using click-point attach mode, setting a curvature, and clicking at carefully chosen points. But to simplify the process, simply choose the path style, right click on an edge or corner of a state, and choose the Add Self-Transition feature.
  9. MESSAGES
Messages can be created in just a few steps. In communication diagrams you can create labeled messages by simply selecting the message style and stamping the message onto your diagram complete with label. The only additional step is editing the label text. Once created in this fashion, the label remains attached when you move the message, plus you can adjust it as you like.
  10. EMPLATES / PARAMETER LISTS
Parameter lists snap onto classifiers to create templates. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the symbol moves or is copied. If the class symbol is deleted, the parameter list is deleted as well. Simply select a parameter list from the style bar, drag it near the corner of a class, package, or collaboration symbol, and let it snap into place.
  11. NOTES
Notes are included for all diagrams. Use notes to comment diagrams or attach specific notational elements. You can attach a note with an anchor path to any node in a diagram. Or you can use an anchor to identify a portion of a diagram (not attached to a node). In the latter case, an anchor point is automatically added to the end of the anchor.
  12. PORTS
Ports snap onto components. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the component symbol moves or is copied. If the component symbol is deleted, the port is deleted as well. Simply select a port (or complex port) from the style bar, drag it near a component (or class or package symbol), and let it snap into place. Private port notation in which the port is entirely within the classifier is supported as well.
  13. INTERFACES
Interface symbols snap onto components with an added path to form an interface. Once added to a component, the interface remains attached when the component moves or is copied. If the component is deleted, the interface is deleted as well. Simply select an interface symbol (provided interfaces or required interfaces) from the style bar, drag it near a component (or class or package symbol), and let it snap into place.
  14. INTERFACES (TO COMPLEX PORTS)
When a component has complex ports, an interface symbol snaps to the nearest complex port on the near edge of the nearest component rather than directly to the edge of the component.
  15. DRAGGING INTERFACES
When you drag an interface that is attached to a connector, it automatically retains the perpendicular path to the component accounting for ports as expected.
  16. LIFELINES -
Lifelines snap onto objects (roles) in sequence diagrams. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the object moves or is copied. If the object is deleted, the lifeline is deleted as well. Simply select a lifeline from the style bar, drag it below an object, and let it snap into place. Activations can also be snapped to objects in the same manner.
  17. ACTIVATIONS -
Activations snap onto lifelines and other activations. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the lifeline (or other activation) moves or is copied. If the lifeline (or other activation) symbol is deleted, the activation is deleted as well. Simply select an activation from the style bar, drag it near a lifeline (or over the edge of an existing activation), and let it snap into place.
  18. TERMINATORS -
Terminators (terminate symbols) in sequence diagrams snap onto the ends of activations and lifelines. Once snapped into place, they remain attached when the activation or lifeline moves or is copied. If the activation or lifeline symbol is deleted, the attached terminate symbol is deleted as well. Simply select a terminator from the style bar, drag it near the end of an activation or lifeline, and let it snap into place. (State symbols can also be snapped to lifelines in this manner.)
  19. SLIDING MESSAGES -
Messages that are attached to lifelines or activations in sequence diagrams can slide along the length of the lifeline or activation while maintaining their connections and staying straight. You can drag a message on its own and its label moves along, or you can select a number of messages and slide them as a group. For finer control, or to force a message to become angled, you can select it individually and drag each endpoint where you like.
  20. UML DIAGRAMS SUPPORTED -
    Activity Diagrams
    Class/Object Diagrams
    Communication Diagrams
    Component Diagrams
    Composite Structure
    Deployment Diagrams
    Interaction Overview
    Package Diagrams
    Sequence Diagrams
    State Diagrams
    Use Case Diagrams
    directly
    supported
    Timing Diagrams
  21. INTERFACES (TO PORTS)
When a component has ports, an interface symbol snaps to the nearest port on the near edge of the nearest component rather than directly to the edge of the component.

Changes from previous version

This version was originally released as build 2022 on 09/08/08. That build contained a bug preventing proper editing of text using the Text tab of the properties screen. This build fixes that bug.
Text Edit Context Menu While editing text (in Text mode), right-click now launches a context menu for easy access to commands like Cut, Copy, Paste, and so on, including the new Undo, Redo, and Insert Field commands (see below).
Text Fields Simple text fields can now be added to figure or label text. A text field is a string of text that reflects information about the diagram. Fields available in this version include file name, creation time, and last save time. Multiple formats are supported for each. Fields can be inserted into text by placing the text caret and choosing Insert Field from the main Edit menu or from the right click menu.
Text Edit Undo/Redo In earlier versions, figure and label text edits could only be undone in whole, reverting to the full text prior to any editing. Now individual text edits can be undone one at a time as is customary in word processing applications. While editing text in text mode, Undo is available from the Edit menu, from the right click context menu, or by the Ctrl-Z shortcut key sequence. Redo is also available in text mode as well (menu or Ctrl-Y). Note that Redo is currently only available for text editing while in text mode - its not yet supported throughout the program.
Text Style "All Caps" A range of text can now be given an All Caps style which forces the text to be displayed in all capital letters (if possible). The All Caps style works similar to Bold or Italics. By default, it is available only in the context (right-click) menu, but you can add a custom toolbar button if you prefer. The main usage is to provide a way to force inserted text fields to be all capital letters.
Fixed a very minor bug in which page margin could be dragged and changed by accident when behind a diagram object.

NEW:
The export screen now contains a "Background" option under the following conditions (1) foreground objects are selected (2) background objects are NOT selected (3) "Selected" option is chosen in the export file selection screen. When the background option is checked, the exported graphic will include the cropped background image behind the selected foreground objects. However, the exported image will remain cropped to the bounds of the selection rectangle, rather than being extended to include the entire background if the background is larger than the selection. See user guide or online help for further description.
Copy now adds a bitmap to the clipboard.
NEW:
minor bug has been fixed in which a different registered clipboard format was used by each of our different products. This meant that copying data in editable form would not work between products. Such copies would occur as graphic images which were not editable. The issue had a simple work-around by opening a diagram created with a different product in a separate window.

UML StateWizard Pro 1.5 acts as an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) add-in, which provides a UML (Unified Modeling Language) state machine programming mechanism in form of portable standard C or C++ classes for either embedded systems development and simulation, or Windows/WinCE application development. After embedded systems' simulation and debugging in IDE, developer can move program to a destination working environment (such as VxWorks, embedded Linux, etc) with little or no extra investment of effort.

Just like Visual C++ ClassWizard, UML StateWizard provides a UML state machine programming mechanism in portable standard C/C++ for cross-platform program developement including Win32/WinCE and embedded systems developing and simulating. After embedded systems simulation and debugging in IDE, developer can move program to a destination working environment (such as VxWorks, embedded Linux, etc) with little or no extra investment of effort.

Why UML StateWizard?

You may ask why UML StateWizard, while there are already many good UML tools such as Rational Rose, VisualState and others. Our answer is:

  1. UML StateWizard aims at not only being a modeling or code generation tool, but also being a full-featured UML dynamic modeling tool with reverse engineering and round-trip engineering features. It models program with the State Charts or the State Tree, moreover, it synchronizes the model with the changes in the application code in the stages of software design and coding;
  2. Just like the MS Visual C++ ClassWizard, StateWizard runs inside the integrated development environment. There is no need to switch between tools for design/development. Many other UML modeling tools run as stand alone applications;
  3. No intermediate modeling file. Build UML diagrams directly from a set of specific macro and flags in source code.
  4. StateWizard rapidly builds applications with state machine based frameworks. It efficiently codes state charts directly in platform-independent standard embedded C/C++;
  5. StateWizard provides state tracking, simulation and debugging for embedded system development.

Those UML tools that generate code for UML behavioral models such as state diagrams are usually quite expensive. Basic UML drawing and code generation tools can be obtained for a few hundred dollars per license seat, but the tools that generate code from state charts are usually on the order of several thousand dollars per seat. Organizations on a limited budget may be forced to use less expensive tools, meaning that the state machine design must be maintained separately from the program code, almost guaranteeing that the design and code will drift away from each other during and after development. It becomes very difficult to keep the design updated with changes in the source code, requiring great process discipline by the developer.

UML StateWizard is a full-featured UML tool:

  1. UML diagram support: StateWizard supports the state tree, state chart drawing for dynamicl modeling.
  2. Forward engineering: The StateWizard UML tool does not limit its use to just pictorial depictions of diagrams. Because the structure of the system defined by the diagram is translated by a developer into actual source code, StateWizard bridges this step by generating the source code in a state machine framework with the methods stubbed out. Developers can take up this stub code and fill in with the actual code.
  3. Reverse engineering: Reverse engineering is exactly the opposite of forward engineering. In reverse engineering, StateWizard loads all the files of the application/system, identifies state relationships among applications, and reconstructs the entire state machine structure along with all relationships.
  4. Round-trip engineering: A rule in software design is that no design remains unchanged. This is as true for small systems as it is for large systems. During development, the design structure defined in the UML model undergoes changes to incorporate differences in implementation that may not have been envisaged during design. It becomes very difficult to keep the design of the system synchronized with the changes in the source code. StateWizard s round-trip engineering feature allows the UML tool to synchronize the model with changes in the application code. StateWizard enforces real-time synchronization of its model to modifications in the source code. For example, developers can visually do a drag-and-drop operation in a state chart diagram and the source code will change as well. On the other hand, developers may directly modify the source code and modifications will be automatically shown in the state chart diagram. StateWizard serves as a bridge between state chart diagram and source code.
  5. Documentation: StateWizard provides some way for the designer to document design decisions in the diagrams. A designer may save a state chart as a BMP file and a state tree as a text file.
  6. * Integration with popular IDE (VC++): With the increasing use of iterative methodologies for building software systems, it becomes very difficult to keep the design of the system in sync with the developed code. Hence, it would be useful if the UML tool provides integration with popular IDEs. This feature would enable the UML tool to be updated with the changes in the source code made in the IDE.

You may apply UML StateWizard to :

Platform-independent embedded system modeling and simulation.

  • In simulation environment, developer can design some simulators using Windows program as service providers. These simulators have identical interface with target service providers' interface. On target environment, developer may take little effort to integrate state machine applications with these service providers to real environment. Active applications may make some service calls exported by service providers, meanwhile may receive some external events triggered by service providers through RTOS functions. There are many different RTOSs although they provide similar functions.
  • RTOS Virtual Layer provides a set of platform independent functions so that it can be moved to other platforms without any state machine applications changes. In debugging, state machines can be used to test how an application handles insufficient memory situations, to examine allocation patterns, or to log allocation information for later analysis.

State machines based Win32/WinCE programs development through window message hooking technology.

  • Windows-based applications are event-driven. Each window has a function, called a window procedure, that the system calls whenever it has input for the window. That procedure takes responses depending on the incoming Windows message type.
  • However, if an application that must sequence a series of actions, or handle inputs differently depending on not only the incoming message but also what state it's in, is often best implemented as a state machine. In a concurrent, distributed system, there are several state machines. Moreover, a state machine may post events to other state machines, so state machines are asynchronous event driven. There is at least an event queue for a running thread.
  • If state machines run at different thread rather than window s thread, developers have to handle the thread resources synchronization issues.
  • Using winodw hook technology, StateWizard run state machine application framework based Win32/WinCE programs without any additional message queue, and these state machines run at the same thread as the hooked window s thread, so that state machines can work tightly with Windows user interface.

UML StateWizard contains:

  1. The State Chart: The State Chart models embedded systems without using heavyweight, expensive CASE tools. The State Chart gives you a "birds's-eye view" of your application's logical structure and flow. It graphically constructs the state hierarchy, with child states nested within their parent nodes. The state chart's major advantage over state trees is that it displays every state's transitions in the form of arrows from one state to another state. If a developer selects a state or a transition, and then right clicks the mouse, StateWizard will display an action list in a drop down menu configured for the selected state or the transition.
  2. The State Tree. The State Tree is a state machine programmer's assistant, located in the VC workspace tab window. While coding, it provides a state machine framework. It makes it easy for developer to do certain routing tasks such as creating the state machine application, creating the state hierarchy, defining entry functions and exit functions for a state, and defining event handlers. While running, it is a state tracker for all active applications. If a developer selects a state tree item and then right clicks the mouse, StateWizard will provide an action list in a drop-down menu configured for the selected project, application, or state.
  3. Resource Data Generator for Embedded System. This tool supports several user interface resource data generation for the embedded system development, including ASCII / Unicode text strings, menus, bitmaps and fonts. These resource items are organized by the Visual C++ 6.0 resource editor.
  4. Simulation and Debugging Support for Embedded System. StateWizard supplies a rich set of APIs for embedded system applications simulation in Visual C++ developer studio. Meanwhile, provides some debugging tools, useful to fix memory leaks or memory overwriting errors, to test how an application handles insufficient memory situations, to examine allocation patterns, or to log allocation information for later analysis. Code Line Calculator. A code line calculator for C/C++ source code
  5. Code/Data Size Analyzer. This tool discloses the program's code size, readonly memory, un-initialized memory and writable memory usage based on the generated map file. Further more, this tool can uncover every variable data length in detail.

Major Features:

  1. Simplicity: It should be easy to construct state machine trees/applications.
  2. Extensibility: It should be extensible to add other pseudo states.
  3. Cross-Compiler: Support for VC++, EVC++, GCC, Diab C and for Win32/Linux
  4. Cross-Platform: The StateWizard engine based on a cross-platform OS API library, for Linux/Win32.
  5. Multi-threaded: Several groups of state machines (applications) are allowed to run at each separate thread/task
  6. Unicode Support: Support Ascii/Unicode log strings output in Ascii/Unicode text files.
  7. Debugging: Provide real-time state tracking into a file and the StateTree, debugger fields filter, module-based output filter.
