Microsoft Windows 95 Update: Windows Socket 2 Update is considered as a convenient as well as effective update which can resolve a number of Winsock2 issues. This update also resolves a number of TCP/IP stack issues. Please read the release notes for a detailed list of all changes.
This update has been released since the Microsoft Windows 95 Service Pack 1 (Sept 10, 1996).
Before downloading the upgrade, please read the License Agreement for Microsoft Windows Sockets 2 for Windows 95.
Warning: If you need to install the Dial-Up Networking 1.2b or earlier update, install the Winsock2 upgrade after installing the Dial-Up Networking upgrade. Due to a problem in the Dial-Up Networking upgrade, it will overwrite some more recent files from the Winsock2 upgrade.
NOTE: This download is not intended for use on computers running Microsoft Windows 98.

The latest release of the Infrared (IR) Communications Driver for Windows 95 is version 2.0.
Infrared (IR) communications, based on technology similar to that used in remote controls, offers a convenient and reliable way to connect to peripheral devices without cables. IrDA connectivity is designed to take advantage of mobile computing features already built into Windows 95 and supports Plug and Play.
The Infrared Communications Driver version 2.0 is an optional component of the Windows 95 operating system. The Infrared Communications Driver supports hardware devices which enable networking and communications over infrared media. The hardware device can be an infrared port built into the platform or an infrared adapter connected to one of the platforms serial or parallel ports.

Winsock Upgrade 1.2 slightly revises Winsock 1.1, the version that shipped with Windows 95.
WARNING: Certain applications modify or replace Winsock or the TCP/IP stack. In such cases, if you install Winsock Upgrade 1.2 and Dial-Up Networking 1.2 Upgrade, these applications could stop working. If you have such applications, you should not install this this upgrade. If you choose to perform the upgrade, and certain applications stop working, you will have to re-install these applications.

- An algorithm that can be used to compromise the security scheme used in the Windows 95 password list (.pwl) file has been posted on the Internet. A person who can access the password list file on the hard disk of a Windows 95-based computer may be able to use this decryption algorithm to generate unencrypted passwords.
- If two users with user names containing the same first eight characters log on to the same Windows 95-based computer, the first users password list file becomes invalid.
Note that this second symptom occurs only with the Windows 95 Password Cache update (Mspwl32.dll version 9.00.951) available with Microsoft Windows 95 Service Pack 1 and OEM Service Release 1.
This problem is resolved in Windows 98.
