/ HDD S.M.A.R.T. extension controls the health status of your hard disks. It can discover a probable hard disk drive (HDD) fail before it actually occurs. HDD S.M.A.R.T. extension uses S.M.A.R.T. technology, included in all modern hard disks. S.M.A.R.T. is a self-testing and monitoring performed by some HDD. It looks like the HDD is continuously making self-tests and calculating some "attributes", which reflect the current state of efficiency and status of the HDD. Each attribute means some detail in HDD status â?? total hours of work, count of read errors, and others. If after a self-test, the HDD "thinks" that its state is changed, it changes the value of the corresponding attribute. For example, if the time of spin-up from idle state changed, the HDD would change (lower) the value of the "Spin-Up Time" attribute. Each attribute has a threshold (lower) value and, at achievement, the HDD may stop working. HDD S.M.A.R.T. extension monitors attribute changes and reports the changed values. |

Hard disk drives are a mechanical part of your computer system. As such, they are more likely to fail than a solid state processor, video card or stick of RAM. Typical HDD failures can include failure of the spindle motor or bearings causing excessive heat or noise, head assembly failures including improper flying height, head contamination, media degradation etc. S.M.A.R.T. or Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology was introduced into most modern hard drives to help detect and predict these failures. Of cause not all hard drive failures are predictable. Catastrophic events such as electronic component failure etc can occur however the majority of failures occur from the HDD deteriorating over time. MS Windows do not monitor HDDs for failures. BIOS can detect a failure, but only when a threshold is exceeded on the drive. Third party applications exist to periodically monitor the drive and predict the failure date, however these applications cost money and are required to be installed on the computer. Smart and Simple on the other hands is just that. It s a simple command line utility to read back the SMART attributes from a HDD while in service. It s a single 31kb executable which can be carried with you on a floppy disk, giving you a quick indication of the health of any disk drive without the burden of installing a sizeable application. |

SMARTReporter is an useful tool that can warn you of (S)ATA hard-drive failures before they actually happen! It does so by periodically polling the S.M.A.R.T.-status of your hard-drives. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a technology built into most modern hard-drives that acts as an "early warning system" for pending drive problems. Because SMARTReporter relies on the S.M.A.R.T. implementation of Mac OS X, it only supports (S)ATA hard-drives, if you want S.M.A.R.T. support for your SCSI, USB or FireWire hard-drive, send feedback to Apple. SMARTReporter can notify you of impending drive failures by sending e-mails, displaying a warning dialog or executing an application. The current status of your drives is always displayed through the customizable menu item. |

The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks. In many cases, these utilities will provide advanced warning of disk degradation and failure. The suite of smartmontools contains two utilities: smartctl is a command line utility designed to perform S.M.A.R.T. tasks such as disk self-checks, and to report the S.M.A.R.T. status of the disk. smartd is a daemon that periodically monitors S.M.A.R.T. status and reports errors and changes in S.M.A.R.T. attributes to syslog. |

Active SMART SCSI version supports S.M.A.R.T. technology on both IDE (ATA) and SCSI devices. However SCSI drives use another method of reporting their S.M.A.R.T. status, in concordance with S.M.A.R.T. implementation for IDE devices. They do not report detailed information about supported attributes and do not support reporting of detailed statistics about S.M.A.R.T. attributes. However SCSI drives report overall health status of the disk and a set of vital disk parameters - such as Defect list, hard drive temperature and other. Active SMART monitors disk health status and uses other health-status disk features of SCSI drives to provide early notification about possible drive failure. Also Active SMART for SCSI supports the SCSI hard drive thermal sensors and can be used to trace the hard drive temperature to prevent its overheating |
