The SQL 2005 Service Manager was designed to be a replacement for the SQL Server Service Manager that came with SQL Server 2000 but is no longer shipped as part of SQL Server.
It allows the management and monitoring of all local SQL Server related services from a convenient system tray application for all editions of SQL Server 2000, 2005 and 2008.
To use SQL2005 Service Manager simply unzip the downloaded file into a folder and double click on SQL2005 Service Manager Setup.msi to install. For the Windows Vista version, please read the Install Instructions in the zip file and ensure the SQLServiceManager service is started before using the application.
The behaviour of SQL2005 Service Manager is very similar to that of the SQL Server Service Manager that is part of Microsoft SQL Server 2000, one exception being that it will always start minimized in the system tray. Another is that the tool only manages local instances.
The system tray icon has a right click menu allowing service and instance selection and control of the currently selected service. Double clicking on the icon or choosing Open SQL2005 Service Manager from the menu will bring up the familiar user interface allowing instance and service selection and control of the selected service. The installer adds a shortcut to your Startup folder so if you dont want it to start automatically simply delete the shortcut.

For example, as a consultant developer, I am often asked to write applications (duh).Sometimes the applications may use a MySQL database. Other times, they may use a MS SqlServer database. I dont want to run both database servers on my laptop at the same time, because usually Im using one or the other, but not both. In serviceToggler,Ive configured two service groups: MySQL and SQLServer.
The MySQL group has one service in it: the mysql database service. The SQLServer group has numerous services in it: SQL Server database service, SQL Server reporting server service, etc.
From the systray icon of serviceToggler, I can select the SQLServer group. It will shutdown the MySQL service and bring up services associated with the SQLServer group.Later on, I may choose to select the MySQL group from serviceToggler and it will shut down the SQLServer services and bring up the MySQL service.
serviceToggler can be configured to use any number of service groups each can be associated with another group to toggle with. Groups dont have to be associated with other groups for toggling, they can stand alone. Selecting a group once from serviceToggler brings it up. Selecting it again, brings the group down.<<less

Important configuration issue: You must overwrite the proxy server password in the configuration wizard
If you are using a proxy server that requires username/password authentication, the WSUS server may fail to synchronize updates if you do not overwrite the proxy server password when running the WSUS Server Configuration Wizard. Since the configuration wizard is launched automatically at the end of setup, this problem can cause synchronization errors after you upgrade from an older version of WSUS to WSUS 3.0.
You can avoid this problem by cancelling the Configuration Wizard after upgrade, or by reentering the correct proxy password when the wizard runs. To recover from this problem once it has occurred, go to ?Options/Update Source and Proxy Server?, reenter the proxy password, and save the setting.
