This is a Java application that will demonstrate the Simulated Annealing algorithm with an attack on the "traveling salesman" problem. What is simulated annealing? Simulated annealing is a technique, which was developed to help solve large combinatorial optimization problems.
It is based on probabilistic methods that avoid being stuck at local (non-global) minima. It has proven to be a simple but powerful method for large-scale combinatorial optimization.
For practical purposes, simulated annealing has solved the famous traveling salesman problem: find the shortest of N! paths connecting N cities. Simulated annealing finds a very good approximation to the shortest path out of the huge number of all possible paths. Annealing is natures trick to find extrema in very complicated situations.
Simulated annealing mimics on a computer the natural process by which crystal lattices of glass or metal relax when heated. The molecules of hot glass or metal are free to move about. Temperature is an average of the thermal energy in each molecule of an object.
If the temperature drops quickly, these molecules solidify into a complex structure. However, if the temperature drops slowly, they form a highly ordered crystal. The molecules of a crystal solidify into a minimal energy state.
Some real applications simulated annealing:
- Determining the sequence of observations for an automated astronomical telescope [2]
- Computer Aided Geometric Design
- Optimization of Econometric Statistical Functions
- Games with random moves determined by the simulated annealing algorithm
- Arranging connections on chips and switching devices in telephone networks

In the simulated annealing algorithm, an objective function to be minimized is defined. Here it will be the total path length through a set of points.

It works by simulating a keypress once every 59 seconds, so your machine thinks youre still working at the keyboard, so wont lock the screen or activate the screensaver.
The icon is shown above - its the leftmost one in the task tray, and this is all you see. Double-clicking the icon empties the coffee pot (thats what the icon is) and temporarily disables the program. Double-clicking it again refills the pot, and will keep your machine awake.
By default the app starts enabled, and works every 59 seconds. There are two command line switches you can use to alter this:
xx - where xx is a number which sets the number of seconds between simulated keypresses. This must be the first text on the commandline
-startoff - if this is found on the commandline, the app starts disabled.
Windows 98: Caffeine works by simulating left shift key down and up events every 59 seconds.
Windows 2000/XP: Caffeine works by simulating a left shift key up event every 59 seconds.
Of all the key presses available, shift is probably the least intrusive, and least likely to interfere with your work.<<less

AIDA contains a simple model of glucose-insulin interaction in the human body. It is intended for simulating the effects on the blood glucose profile of changes in insulin and diet for a typical insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetic patient (IDDM).
AIDA is only intended to be used for educational / teaching / demonstration purposes. Given the complexity of the human glucoregulatory system it is not possible for a simple model, such as that contained within AIDA, to accurately predict an individual patients blood glucose profile.
AIDA comes with 40 case scenarios which can be simulated as standard. Further case scenarios can be added by users. AIDA also contains a very simple knowledge based system which can identify problems in the case scenario data.
A list of suggestions which might correct some of these problems can also be generated. This list is provided solely as a prompt to the sort of insulin dosage adjustments that users might like to try simulating with AIDA.
