illustrate the steps involved in obtaining numerical solutions more>> In this article (SOLVING PROBLEMS NUMERICALLY), we look at solving two problems numerically. The problems solved are relatively simple and actually have closed-form solutions. We use simple examples to illustrate the steps involved in obtaining numerical solutions without getting too involved in the mathematics. And, by having closed-form, or exact, solutions available, it gives us something to check our computer programming techniques. The first problem (one-dimensional) requires the determination of a model rocket engines burn time in order to achieve a desired altitude. The second problem (two-dimensional) is a numerical implementation of converting from rectangular to polar coordinates. While solving these problems, we will address some of common problems encountered when implementing numerical (computer-based) solutions. Suggestions for using the example problems and potential expansions of the problems are addressed.<<less

Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication Math practice game more>> Pie Math (Math Practice game) supports math practice for addition, subtraction, mixed (addition and subtraction) and multiplication. The student clicks on the gun above the correct answer and a pie shoots out towards the monkey. The monkey responds to the pie hit as if he is being teased. (A popular activity for young students).
The program is Donation Ware with no limitations or restrictions as long as the program is unchanged and includes the BlakeWare references. It may be freely used as long as you want.
You easily customize the program to use a picture of a brother or sister that your child likes to tease. The program includes a utility to easily change or record new responses when the face is hit by the pie.
The Pie Math Set program is used to change the settings of the Pie Math program. It can be located in the parent/teacher directory. It allows you to view the results of previous test. It also allows the following items to be changed:
Type of problems generated (Add, Subtract, Mixed, Multiplication)
Maximum numbers used in the problems
Maximum time for the test
Number of currect answers to complete test
Phrases used when target is hit (requires a microphone)
