The example involves the path of an object flying through the air. Gravity is in effect, so the object will eventually fall to the ground. This object could be a softball being tossed, a hose squirting a stream of water, or an arrow flying through the air. Solving the problem requires knowledge of angles and reading graphs. The material should be readily grasped by Grades 4 and up.

The problems solved are relatively simple and actually have closed-form solutions. We use simple examples to illustrate the steps involved in obtaining numerical solutions without getting too involved in the mathematics. And, by having closed-form, or exact, solutions available, it gives us something to check our computer programming techniques. The first problem (one-dimensional) requires the determination of a model rocket engines burn time in order to achieve a desired altitude. The second problem (two-dimensional) is a numerical implementation of converting from rectangular to polar coordinates. While solving these problems, we will address some of common problems encountered when implementing numerical (computer-based) solutions. Suggestions for using the example problems and potential expansions of the problems are addressed.<<less

This problem has a wide variety of real applications: rocket and missile launching, targeting and intercepts, satellite orbit transfers and rendezvous, numerical optimization, polynomial root finding, and solving nonlinear equations. The mathematics needed to solve the problem are not too involved - only algebra and trigonometry. The process of solving the problem, however, is at times detailed and tedious. But, this is a concept that needs to be taught: real-world problems are not necessarily easy. Before looking at the solution, we will examine the real-world problem solving process.<<less

You cannot push two or more boxes at once. The challenge comes in having to think ahead; in the process of moving the boxes, you might accidently create unsolvable positions. Players will soon learn that this is the main obstacle in solving problems. Advanced players also try to find shorter and shorter solutions, measured in man moves and boxes pushes.
This Widget version features 50 puzzles that you can solve with your brain, and a keyboard or the mouse. The mazes range from very simple to extremely difficult ones requiring many hours of brain work.
The game was invented in Japan. The original program was written by Hiroyuki Imabayashi. Since then, several versions have been written for most personal computers.

Provides several easy-to-use features including undo, zooming, highlighting and temporary might-be values used for advanced techniques. Also offers a powerful and very quick solving engine that works like humans do and can be used for small hints as well as for watching the solving process as a video. The package also includes many user-made griddlers of all difficulty and complexity levels.
Easy-to-use comfortable interface
Compact interface uses most of the window space for the main puzzle. The grid is usually large enough for solving even on smaller displays. Each opened puzzle is automatically fitted and centered to the actual window size, but can also be zoomed in or out, resized or scrolled.
Besides the grid, the main window includes only a small toolbar and a statusbar, providing as much space for the puzzle as possible. The entire solving and navigation can be done by mouse and all instruments are placed in a way to simplify and ease the puzzling.
To access menu items quickly, nearly each menu item has its keyboard shortcut (hotkey).
Powerful and quick auto-solver
Upon difficulties with solving, there is always a ready-to-use auto-solver, which works the same way as humans do. Its hints are always logical steps in the solution. It never gives a hint that can not be discovered at the current state of the solving process. This is very useful, when you have no idea where to continue. The auto-solver will help you find the spot.
While the auto-solver works in steps, you may also let it run in a loop and watch the entire solving process in a quick movie.
The andvanced auto-solver is able to solve all griddlers included in the package. However, it should be able to solve any griddler that is also solvable by a human. This entire project was started mainly to implement an all-solving machine, and it was quite sucessful.<<less
