Torpedo Submarine Battles 1.0 brings players an interesting torpedo submarine game which challenges you to sink and obliterate ships such as the mighty battleship, the long-range missile cruiser and the versatile destroyer along with other submarines. Arise from the aqueous depths and eradicate enemy ships in naval battles across the world's seas and oceans in your own stealthy torpedo submarine.

Be wary of enemy torpedos from destroyers and other submarines however otherwise you could fall to the sea floor yourself. The various ships in the game have their own unique weaknesses and strengths. The battleship has the strongest hull available in the whole game, with the ability to unload deadly shells at surface ships. The shells however can be avoided and cannot target submarines.

The missile cruiser is able to launch seeking missiles at surface targets, however the missiles inflict less damage than shells and torpedos. The destroyer can target and engage both surface ships and submarines, however with the weakest hull available it is more easily destroyed by both enemy torpedoes and surface weaponry.

The submarine is enigmatic and hare footed, however its weak hull is exposed to other torpedos and it must be turned toward its target to send off its own torpedoes.
Choose from an array of naval scenarios from battleship support in the Baltic Sea to a major fleet engagement in the Bering Sea.

Major Features:

1. Controls
   • Propel your submarine effortlessly around the naval front line using the arrow keys
   • When in position, launch your torpedos by pressing the space bar key
2. Background
   • Torpedo Submarine Battles was the first naval-related game to be developed and released for the Play Games Instantly site, and as such it can be thought of as a prototype.
   • This game borrowed and expanded upon some of the simple physics code from Scooter Racer (the first racing game released on the PGI site). The base game engine for Torpedo Submarine Battles was built almost from scratch, as much greater complexity in object interaction was required then what the engine from Scooter Racer offered.
   • The end result was a concise and well made game, with an engine that could be expanded upon and modified for other games as needed.
3. Design
   • The traditional top-down view to keep the game physics and rendering as simple as possible. The player would participate in a wide range of naval skirmishes across various seas and oceans in their own submarine.
   • Originally an editor was planned for the game so that the player could create there own skirmishes to take part in. The idea for the editor was scrapped during the development process however as the game itself took much longer than expected to develop.
4. Development
   • There were several new features to be developed for the engine in order for the naval game to fulfill its function.
   • These features included management of various types of objects whose actual numbers changed during gameplay, management of different "teams" of objects as well as the associated collision detection between projectiles of different teams and their enemies.
   • By far the greatest hurdle was implementing the targeting system for the computer-controlled navy. Various checks needed to be put in place for example to make sure that ships wouldn't target recently destroyed ships, as this would prevent the destroyed ship from being removed from memory as there was still a reference to it.
   • Other considerations such as target types (submerged/surface ships) needed to be taken into account as well.
   • Randomized targeting was first considered for greater battle variance, however as this would consume valuable development time on bigger issues.
     
   • You could say however the end result proved to be more realistic, as ships would concentrate their firepower on single targets to take them out as quickly as possible.
