W32.Sober.gen is a generic detection that can detect any variants of W32.Sober. If your computer is detected as infected with W32.Sober.gen, download and run the tool. In most cases, the tool will be able to remove the infection.
The W32.Sober Removal Tool does the following:
- Terminates the W32.Sober viral processes.
- Deletes the W32.Sober files.
- Deletes the dropped files.
- Deletes the registry values that the worm added

Here are the instructions:
- Apply the Spyware.Apropos Removal Tool.
- Update the definitions by starting the Symantec program and running LiveUpdate.
- Run a full system scan to detect any other security risks on the computer.
- If the scan detects any further security risks, check for removal tools at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/security.risks.tools.list.html.
- If there are no removal tools for the security risks that are detected, follow the manual removal instructions listed in the threat report

Obtaining and running the tool
NOTE: You need administrative rights to run this tool on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP.
- Download the FixAdix.exe file
- Save the file to a convenient location, such as the downloads folder or the Windows Desktop.
- Refer to the section "Digital signature" to check the authenticity of the digital signature.
- Close all running programs and restart the computer.
- Close all running programs before running the tool.
- Double-click the FixAdix.exe file to start the removal tool.
- Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.
When the tool has finished running, you will see a message indicating that the Symantec Security Check files have been removed from your computer.
