KpyM Telnet Server is a free and useful telnet server for WinNT that will come in handy.

KTS accepts connection from any telnet/ssh client running on any OS.

If successful, the attacker can gain complete control of your system. With the Imaginary Telnet Server running, he will be served a fake response which will prevent him from accessing any resources available on your system.
The server will give him the impression that he has found a top secret military computer. But when he tries to log in, the server will offer humorous rejections.
If he uses one of the password cracking programs and tries to log in persistently, the server will feed him a series of completely fake data for a while, making him think that he got in.
After a while, the server will "discover" the intruder and kick him off. No matter how hard the attacker tries, he cannot log in to your system via Telnet. Use it by itself or alongside a firewall. the server runs in the background and stays out of your way completely.

The denial of service can occur when a malicious client sends a particular malformed string to the server. Although the Telnet service is provided as part of Windows 2000 products, the service is not enabled by default, and customers who have not enabled it would not be at risk. Even in affected systems, the effect of the vulnerability is limited to Telnet itself there is no capability to cause other services to fail, or to cause Windows 2000 to fail. Telnet services could be restored after an attack by restarting the Telnet Server.
Microsoft has released this patch to eliminate this security vulnerability.

Microsoft has implemented the Telnet protocol by providing a Telnet Server in several products. The implementations in two of these products ? Windows 2000 and Interix 2.2 ? contain unchecked buffers in the code that handles the processing of telnet protocol options.
An attacker could use this vulnerability to perform a buffer overflow attack. A successful attack could cause the Telnet Server to fail, or in some cases, could possibly allow an attacker to execute code of her choice on the system. Such code would execute using the security context of the Telnet service, but this context varies from product to product. In Windows 2000, the Telnet service always runs as System; in the Interix implementation, the administrator selects the security context in which to run as part of the installation process.
