PgmText software is designed to edit text parts of program files or other binary files. Its also possible to edit wide character text - resource part of a program (text in Menu items, Buttons etc.).
You can search for a text or just navigate with Home, Back, Next and End buttons - this program will skip all other data and go to the next text string. The navigation or search is started from the current position or from the binary data position if scrolled manually. There is a possibility to specify the minimal text string length to prevent the program from displaying non-text data.
The program will never change the position or the total length of the text or the size of the file because it would otherwise become corrupted. It also means you can not specify a larger text string than it already is. If you specify a smaller text, the selected padding (zeros, space or dots) is used to fill up the string to the total text length.
However, some programs rely on the text string length. So, if you change the text to a smaller one, it could corrupt the program file. To avoid this, try space, tab or dot padding in place of zeros. If you want to change menu item text which contains keyboard shortcuts (e.g. "Open Ctrl+O"), the best way to do this is to fill up the text with space up to the tab separator (hex. 09) manually.
There is no guaranty you shall not corrupt files using this program for editing. Thats why a good practice is to let the check box switched On for making backup files by saving.
There is also a possibility to choose the character range: Normal - only the ANSI low range or all alphanumeric characters of the language/character set currently selected in the system. To type a tab character or line break in the Search or Text edit boxes use the usual key combinations: Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Enter (only for the Text edit box).
In the Binary data window the current text characters are displayed green and the changed characters red. With the Store button you save the current change to an internal buffer. With the Undo button you discard the current change and reload that part of the text from the buffer. The text changes are not saved to the source file unless you save it manually after editing.
